In life, people come and go, but real friendships are able to withstand any harsh conditions — even an exorcism. In Amazon Prime Video's 1988-set horror comedy My Best Friend’s Exorcism, Elsie Fisher and Amiah Miller portray high school-aged best friends, Abby and Gretchen, whose lives are seemingly normal, but everything changes when supernatural energies enter their lives. The film, based on Grady Hendrix's novel, is directed by Killing Eve’s Damon Thomas and Good Girl’s Jenna Lamia is also attached as a screenwriter.

The first trailer for My Best Friend’s Exorcism, which is set to be available for streaming next month on September 30th, gives a glimpse at what's to come in the upcoming horror comedy. The scene is set with 80s costuming and music, as everything begins to change for Abby and Gretchen. After a trip to the lake turns eerie, Gretchen's behavior begins to change, and she’s seen scribbling questionable mantras into a notebook, wielding a knife, and with her eyes rolled back into her head. When Abby confides in a religious weightlifter named Christian (played by Christopher Lowell), he tells her that the only way to get Gretchen back is to give her an exorcism.

The My Best Friend’s Exorcism trailer continues to depict Abby and Christian and their attempt to release the evil spirit from Gretchen's body, which seems to be very chaotic as Gretchen is depicted screaming demonically while tied to a bed while Abby cries and Christian cheers that they’ve “got themselves a demon.” The trailer ends with a clip of Gretchen at school lunch as she throws up all over a classmate, who’s comically concerned about her ruining his expensive t-shirt.

Filled with 80s flare and many moments for laughs My Best Friend's Exorcism is seemingly attempting to approach the horror genre in a more down-to-earth way, which definitely has a chance to work in its favor. Considering most films in the genre take themselves extremely seriously as they regularly have “based on a true story” attached to them, My Best Friend’s Exorcism is self-aware as it allows for its audience to laugh at its ridiculous subject matter. This combined with its nostalgic elements, comedic timing, and lessons about friendship could make for a very compelling and slightly relatable story.

Nonetheless, based on the first look at My Best Friend’s Exorcism, the film will definitely achieve its goal of both scaring and making its audience laugh. More will be unveiled when the film is available for streaming on September 30th, on Prime Video.
