Jimmy Donaldson, known as MrBeast on YouTube, now has more subscribers than gaming content creator Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg. MrBeast finally surpasses PewDiePie in YouTube subscriber count, becoming the most subscribed content creator on the Google-owned platform.

PewDiePie was the most popular content creator on YouTube for almost a decade. His channel gathered the most subscribers on YouTube between 2013 and 2019, with most viewers watching PewDiePie’s videos for his funny playthroughs and vlogs. But for a few years now, competition has been fiercer on YouTube. PewDiePie lost his first place in subscriber count to the Indian music and home movie label company T-Series in 2019, before deciding to end his YouTuber career in 2020. Despite publishing fewer videos, PewDiePie remained one of the most popular content creators on YouTube.

While PewDiePie was fighting against T-Series for the largest subscriber count on YouTube, another content creator helped the Swede in his rivalry: MrBeast. As he used to purchase various billboards to boost PewDiePie’s popularity, the YouTuber now gathers more subscribers than his former ally. MrBeast is now the most-subscribed individual YouTuber and overall the fourth most-subscribed channel, with 111 million subscribers as of November 2022.

Unlike PewDiePie, MrBeast’s videos don’t focus on gaming. Instead, the content creator launched a new kind of video on YouTube, challenging his friends and subscribers to win large sums of money. MrBeast began his rise to fame in 2017, when he published a 24-hour-long video of himself counting to 100,000. The video went viral, and MrBeast decided to upload more challenges like this one. Since then, the popularity of the YouTuber kept on increasing, leading to Fortnite signing a collaboration with MrBeast and his virtual burger chain.

The most popular video of MrBeast was inspired by Squid Game, where 456 contestants fought in various challenges for a chance to win $456,000. To film this video, MrBeast set aside a massive budget of $3.5 million, recreating iconic scenes from the popular TV series without its signature violence. The video counted over 303 million views, becoming the most popular on MrBeast’s YouTube channel.

Neither MrBeast nor PewDiePie commented on this YouTube subscriber count milestone. As MrBeast uploads between one and two videos per month, he may create a special video to celebrate this occasion. Previous videos saw MrBeast give large amounts of money to his subscribers, so he could mark this milestone with a large giveaway to thank his followers.
