Arachnophobia is a pretty common form of phobia, which is understandable given the terrifying nature of these eight-legged monstrosities. Having to deal with these scary beings can be quite a task, with even the hardiest people around getting squeamish the moment they gaze upon these creepy crawlies. Thankfully, for the most part, people don't really have to deal with large or imposing spiders, and people will majorly encounter slightly smaller variants of these arachnids instead.

However, movies don't face these restrictions at all. Instead, these films feature some truly horrifying versions of these creatures that can send shivers down the spine of anyone. Keeping this in mind, here are some of the scariest spiders to have even appeared in a movie.

7 Tarantula (Dr. No)

A tarantula in Dr. No

James Bond has faced his fair share of threats over the course of his movies. However, the fact that he had to lie perfectly still while a venomous spider was crawling all over his body is easily one of the worst ordeals he had to get through.

It's a shame that the spider that was chosen for this scene is a tarantula, which is actually a gentle spider that shies away from conflict and isn't even all that venomous! However, due to their scary look, this species of spider has been misrepresented time and time again in movies, and this won't be the last time that this kind of spider appears on this list.

6 Aragog (Harry Potter)

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets documents the protagonist's second year in Hogwarts' School of Witchcraft and Wizardly, where the return of Tom Riddle made this school year quite adventurous once again. Viewers who fear either snakes or spiders will have a horrible time with this movie since it features giant versions of both monstrosities.

Aragog is the massive spider that Hagrid was taking care of in secret, with his imposing presence made even more terrifying by the hordes of spider minions that accompanied this massive beast. The fact that Harry and Ron had to run for their lives and were saved in the nick of time by Ron's magical flying car showed just how bloodthirsty Aragog and his minions really were.

5 Shelob (Lord Of The Rings)

Speaking of giant disgusting spiders, it would be hard to not mention Shelob from Lord of the Rings. This massive spider serves as one of the final hurdles that both Frodo and Sam need to take care of before they can finally destroy the Ring once and for all. However, this spider gets the upper hand on Frodo after a tense battle and paralyzes her.

Frodo would've become Shelob's dinner had it not been for Sam's intervention, using all the tools at his disposal to wound Shelob seriously enough for her to back off and leave the two hobbits alone. As a result, they were finally able to carry on with their journey and destroy the Ring, as intended.

4 Axl (Home Alone)

A tarantula on Marv's face in Home Alone

Another tarantula makes its way on this list in the form of Axl. Out of all the spiders on this list, Axl is easily the tamest and least scary of the bunch since he's nothing more than a regular tarantula kept by Kevin's brother, Buzz. However, it's what Kevin does with this spider that makes it so terrifying.

During the climax of the movie when Kevin is fighting Harry and Marv, the kid gets caught just before he could bolt up the stairs. However, in a stroke of luck, Kevin managed to find Axl roaming around right on top of him and picked him up before dropping it on Marv's face. The very idea of a massive spider crawling around on one's face is a spine-chilling prospect, even if the said spider is a harmless variant like the tarantula.

3 Gray Widower (The Mist)

Gray Widower from The Mist

Stephen King's novels have been adapted into movies time and time again, with The Mist being another legendary movie inspired by his novels. The Mist wastes no time in establishing just how nightmarish the idea of being trapped by a mist can be, with said mist being populated by a whole host of monsters who are downright terrifying to behold.

During the events of the movie, the survivors try and head to a pharmacy in search of medical supplies. However, during their search, they are assaulted by a bunch of special spiders known as Grey Widowers, whose webbing is acidic and can burn through flesh with ease. The fact that they'd lain eggs inside a living human being who was being eaten alive by these newly-hatched spiders made these creatures even scarier!

2 Venomous Spiders (Arachnophobia)

Arachnophobia

It's only a given that a movie by the name of Arachnophobia would feature some truly scary spiders indeed. While these spiders don't have a name per se, their venom is pretty potent and can kill people in a matter of seconds.

Fighting against these monstrosities is easier said than done. However, the heroes manage to figure out the mystery behind these spiders and take care of this threat once and for all, despite having a crippling fear of these arachnids.

1 Tarantulas (Kingdom Of The Spiders)

Kingdom Of The Spiders

Another movie fails to represent the misunderstood tarantula in a positive light. That being said, the spiders used in this movie are actual tarantulas, and watching William Shatner react to a multitude of these eight-legged monsters feels quite authentic.

Kingdom of the Spiders is a fun watch for fans who want to see a classic movie with realistic spiders. It might not blow anyone's mind, but it's still a pretty engaging watch in its own right.
