Set in a galaxy far, far away, Star Wars takes most of its inspiration from otherworldly concepts. When it isn't incorporating absurd elements into its movies, shows, and comics, however, viewers can expect to see a few less bizarre details hitting the screen, but even the most ordinary things in Star Wars can feel a little ridiculous.

As a franchise centered around aliens, laser swords, and world-destroying weapons, Star Wars encourages its fans to embrace the absurd. That said, it's only possible to tolerate ridiculous concepts for so long, especially when certain things, like hairstyles, can become distracting. The Star Wars franchise is home to some truly ridiculous hairstyles, but some are more bizarre than others.

5 The Padawan Braid - Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan in The Phantom Menace

The Padawan braid is sported by all Padawans who train to become Jedi Knights. Once their training is complete, a ceremony is held in which the braid is severed using a lightsaber; if a Padawan decides to leave the Jedi Order, the braid is ripped off. Sporting a braid is practical as doing so helps Jedi present themselves in accordance with their rank, but forcing Padawans to grow them is one of the most ridiculous customs associated with the Jedi Order.

In Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan Kenobi (played by Ewan McGregor) sports a Padawan braid which he tends to let fall over his shoulder. This marked the hairstyle's first appearance in Star Wars, and though the series was already home to some ridiculous hairstyles, the Padawan braid quickly became one of the most absurd. In essence, the Padawan Braid is nothing more than a glorified rattail. Though there's nothing wrong with having a hairstyle like this, the fact the Jedi place such importance on it further increases how ridiculous it truly is.

4 The Cinnamon Buns - Star Wars: A New Hope

First introduced in Star Wars: A New Hope, Princess Leia quickly proved to be one of the most fashionable characters in the Star Wars universe. Sporting a blindingly white gown, viewers immediately knew she commanded great respect, but the cinnamon buns she wore on either side of her head were a different story. Though there's no use in denying how impressive this hairstyle is, it remains one of the most ridiculous looks to come from the franchise.

The cinnamon bun look went on to become one of the most iconic hairstyles associated with Star Wars; it suited the world in which the story was being told and therefore felt like a suitable addition to the heavily fantasy-inspired narrative. In subsequent movies, Princess Leia's adventures led her to sport a variety of other outlandish hairstyles, but none were ever as ridiculous as the cinnamon buns she donned atop her head in Star Wars: A New Hope.

3 Rey's Triple Buns - Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Though Rey opted to sport a much more practical hairstyle toward the climax of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, she spent the rest of the sequel trilogy sporting one of the most ridiculous hairstyles in all of Star Wars. As a denizen of Jakku and also a scavenger, it makes sense why Rey would opt to keep her hair up, but tying it into three separate buns seems a little excessive, especially if each part of her hair is the same length.

Apart from exploring ship wreckages, there doesn't seem to be much to do on Jakku, so Rey likely gets a lot of time to herself. Shaping her hair the way she does would likely pass a great deal of time, so it makes sense why she would opt to present herself this way. That said, she doesn't have the required time to style her hair when she leaves Jakku with Finn, so the fact it retains its bun-inspired appearance is a little ridiculous. Even though the triple buns are largely considered Rey's most iconic hairstyle, it's hard to deny how ridiculous they are, both because of their appearance and how difficult they would be to maintain.

2 All Of Queen Amidala's Hairstyles - Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

Like her mother before her, Padme has a habit of sporting some truly ridiculous hairstyles. Before revealing herself to be the Queen of Naboo, she sported a relatively ordinary look, but when she took her rightful place as ruler, she began dressing as one would expect. To ensure her survival, Padme entrusted a lookalike to pose as her. Not only did this lookalike act and speak like Padme, but she also styled her hair in a similar way.

Though most of her hairstyles are quite eccentric, there's something extra unusual about the headpieces she incorporates into her look in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Not only do these hairdos symbolize wealth, but they also showcase exactly how ridiculous Star Wars can get. While the main purpose of these ridiculous hairstyles might be to conceal the doppelganger's identity, Padme has also been seen sporting similar looks in subsequent movies, proving them to be acceptable hairstyles in the Star Wars universe.

1 The Double Stripe - Star Wars: The Clone Wars

To help viewers differentiate between the clones of Star Wars, some were given unique physical features. While certain design choices were subtle, a few select clones were given fascinating hairstyles to help them stand out from the somewhat repetitive crowd. Most clones that appear in Star Wars: The Clone Wars are bald, which makes the clones who sport hair on their heads much easier to remember, especially when their hairstyles are noteworthy.

Clones who opt to sport the double stripe hairstyle usually do so to honor a fallen brother. The double stripe look consists of two rectangular-shaped parallel patches of hair placed on the center of a clone's head that extend to the back of the clone's neck and meet in the center. While several clones wear their hair in this way to pay respect to their fellow troopers, CC-1004, a clone trooper commander, went one step further a dyed his double stripe red.
