A recent study has claimed that the PlayStation 5 is the most popular console in over 100 countries globally, according to Google search data. The console war between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo has once again been a fierce one throughout the ninth console generation with competition between the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Switch. The PS5 and Xbox Series X have traded blows with one another several times through the two years since their launch. Now, a study has claimed the PS5 is winning the Google search race against Microsoft.

While the PS5 has been met with several issues related to supply and parts shortages, the obstacles don't seem to have stopped the console's worldwide success following its 2020 launch. The PS5 has been a hot commodity among gamers, due in part to the shortages, and has seen massive buyouts every time retailers restock the console. Sony has even claimed it believes the PS5 could outsell the PS4 by as soon as 2024, which would place the device in the top 5 best-selling consoles of all time. Now, sports games publication Futbin has released a study supporting the console's success.

Sports gaming publication Futbin recently released a study showing the PS5's popularity based on Google searches over the past year. The study claims that the PS5 is the most popular console worldwide, seeing the most Google searches in 103 out of the study's 184 represented countries. The study places the Switch as holding the second-highest Google search count with the Nintendo handheld-home console hybrid winning 36 countries. Xbox and PS4 rounded out the global top searches holding 30 and 11 countries, respectively.

Alongside the information about console searches, the study also listed the most popular sports games worldwide by the same Google Search metric. EA Sports' FIFA franchise reportedly captured the most Google searches title by a wide margin with FIFA 22 leading in a staggering 141 countries. One of its biggest soccer rivals in PES took the second-place finish as PES 2022 led Google searches in just 11 countries. Other games represented in the study included 2K's NBA 2K22 in China and WWE 2K22 in the United States.

The popularity of the PS5 comes as the console is quickly approaching its second anniversary with several major titles set to launch next month. The week leading up to the PS5's second anniversary on November 12th will see the release of both God of War Ragnarok and Sonic Frontiers, with the former being a PlayStation console exclusive. Sony has several major exclusives on the horizon for next year as well, including Final Fantasy 16 and Marvel's Spider-Man 2. With major games and big sales projections, Sony is looking to extend its success with the PS5 for years to come.
