These dark Disney characters might be unlikeable, but they're always intriguing, and undeniably essential to the story's balance.

These antagonists in Disney movies are not just mere obstacles for our heroes since they're complex characters with their motives, fears, and desires. No matter if they're driven by jealousy, power, or simple malice, they always become their story's most memorable characters. Many of the male Disney villains send a shiver down fans' spine with their sinister plots but some of them are amusing and eccentric and make these movies not just unforgettable but also much more fun.

10 Jafar

Aladdin

Aladdin not only features one of the smartest Disney princesses but also one of Disney's greediest villains. Jafar, the Royal Vizier of Agrabah, is a master manipulator as well as a formidable sorcerer. With his sinister charm and thirst for power, he aims to control the magical city and its treasures at all costs.

Jafar is driven by greed and a desire for the Sultan's throne, and he's willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals, even if it means using the mysterious powers of a magical lamp. Aladdin's story follows the tale of a street-smart young man and his journey from the streets of Agrabah to the heart of the palace, with the help of a genie.

8 Shere Khan

The Jungle Book

Shere Khan is The Jungle Book's fearsome tiger who rules the jungles with an iron paw. He has a deep-seated hatred for humans, especially the young boy Mowgli, which helps drive the narrative of this beloved classic tale.

This Disney movie was based on Rudyard Kipling's novel and tells the adventures of Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves, as he tries to find his place in the animal kingdom. The Jungle Book is considered by many movie lovers as one of the best kids' movies greatly thanks to Shere Khan's haunting presence and relentless pursuit, reminding fans of the age-old battle between man and wild. His silky voice and commanding presence make him a villain no viewer can't easily forget.

7 Captain Hook

Captain Hook is the dangerous and vengeful captain of The Jolly Roger who became one of Disney's most recognizable villains. While Captain Hook might seem like an elegant and sometimes foolish character he's one of the most bloodthirsty male Disney villains who doesn't have much problem with killing children.

Peter Pan is one of Disney's most inspiring movies about the power of imagination that also motivated its viewers to not be afraid to try new things and go on new adventures. Its magical story has one of the best movie fairies and is about a young girl, Wendy, who has been whisked away along with her brothers to the island of Neverland.

Beauty and the Beast

Gaston is one of the most vain and brutal male Disney villains who would get aggressive and vindictive whenever he didn't immediately get what he wanted. Even though he wasn't intelligent he was enabled and supported by the townsfolk who looked up to him because he was strong and handsome.

His character proved to Disney fans that the real monsters aren't always those who we might first think. Beauty and the Beast is one of Disney's most iconic animated movies with one of the best live-action Disney remakes. Its story follows a young girl's adventures after Belle joins the household of an infamous Beast to save his father from imprisonment.

5 Hades

Hercules

Hades is Disney's most dangerous yet hilarious male villain who was inspired by Greek mythology. He's one of the best movie gods who quickly became one of Disney's most beloved villains. Since Hades was a Greek god he had many powerful abilities and used his devious mind to finally defeat his brother Zeus and take his place as the leader of Gods.

However, Hades was also cowardly and would only use his powers and face his enemies once he was sure that they were much weaker than him. Hercules is a fun and adventure-filled animated movie inspired by some of the most iconic Greek mythological tales. Its story follows Hercules who sets out on an epic adventure to prove to himself and his family that he's a true hero.

The Princess and the Frog

Dr. Facilier was one of the scariest and most powerful male Disney villains who planned on ruling over New Orleans by taking out his enemies one by one. This evil witch doctor was able to talk to the other side as well as spell casting and could tell the future. He was a power-hungry and cruel character who didn't care about anyone as long as he was able to control others.

Dr. Facilier was also one of the most manipulative and clever villains in Disney movies who could easily influence others to achieve his goals. The Princess and the Frog is a magical movie about acceptance and determination and its story follows Tiana's adventures as the young waitress who works hard for her dreams gets turned into a frog because of an evil curse and a spoiled prince.

3 Scar

The Lion King

Scar is one of the most devious and cruel male Disney villains with one of the best Disney villain songs that's been giving chills to fans for many decades now. This unforgettable villain was vindictive, power-hungry, and so ruthless that he would kill his brother to get to the throne.

However, Scar never faced anyone equal in a fight instead he chose to manipulate his young nephew and secretly planned the murder of his brother. The Lion King is one of Disney's most popular animated movies about the adventures of young prince Simba who ran away from home after his father's tragic death.

2 Governor Ratcliffe

Pocahontas

Governor Ratcliffe is one of the most greedy, cruel, and racist male Disney villains who was inspired by a real historical figure by the same name who was the captain of the Discovery ship. He looked down on everyone and only cared about getting more gold for himself to increase his social status.

Pocahontas is one of the greatest movies set in the 17th century and is an inspiring Disney movie that's loosely based on historical events, and it has a powerful story about unconditional love and respect toward all living beings. Its story follows the adventures of an English soldier who builds a relationship with Pocahontas, the daughter of Chief Powhatan during the colonists' invasion.

1 Claude Frollo

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Claude Frollo is Disney's most hypocritical and ruthless villain who was a religious fanatic and was personally responsible for hundreds of deaths. Frollo was also racist and looked down on pretty much everyone else and would show his sadistic side every time he had a chance.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of the most popular Disney movies based on Victor Hugo's beloved novel of the same title. It's an emotional and beautifully designed movie that teaches its viewers that people should be judged based on their internal characters and not merely on their appearances. Its story follows Quasimodo's adventures as the kind but physically deformed bell-ringer of the Notre Dame Cathedral explores Paris for the first time and builds a friendship with a gypsy dancer.
