Friendships in anime are usually a sight to behold. Many agree that watching two friends go through harsh ordeals together is amazing and makes a person realize the importance of having friends. Over the years, avid anime watchers have been treated to some beautiful friendships that have melted their hearts.

Unfortunately, in some cases, characters end up betraying their closest friends for one reason or the other. While the betrayal hurts their relationship with the other person, it is used as a device to progress the story. Furthermore, it also provides the necessary character development for the characters who are involved in the feud. With that in mind, we take a look at the most iconic friends who became enemies.

7 Griffith and Guts

Griffith and Guts are characters from Berserk. After seeing Guts' swordsmanship, Griffith decided that he wanted him in his army, so he suggested having a duel and the loser would have to respect the wishes of the winner. Unfortunately, Guts lost the fight, and he was forced to join the Band of Hawk.

It took some time for Griffith and Guts to get along, but they ended up becoming the best of friends. When Guts left the Band of Hawk, Griffith fell into despair and committed a foolish act, which resulted in the collapse of his mercenary group. In a last-ditch attempt to save his dream, Griffith chose to sacrifice his friends and he was reborn as one of the members of the God Hand. This started a fierce rivalry between the two characters.

6 Reiner and Eren

Reiner and Eren weren't very close friends, but the latter respected Reiner because of his skills. The two of them were part of the same group in the Survey Corps. They fought together, laughed together, and, above all, they survived together.

As the plot continued to progress, Reiner foolishly revealed that Bertholdt, and he were Titans. From that very moment, Eren swore that he would never forgive the two. This revelation effectively ended the friendship between Eren and Reiner, and it triggered an enmity that would continue even in the final season of the series.

5 Kakashi Hatake and Obito Uchiha

Kakashi Hatake and Obito Uchiha took two very different paths in their lives. Despite suffering from an immense amount of mental and emotional trauma, Kakashi did not stray from the path of righteousness. On the other hand, Obito became a wicked person, who was the mastermind behind the Fourth Great Ninja War.

Obito had a huge influence on Kakashi's life, and the latter was always grateful to Obito for being his friend. Obito helped Kakashi learn the importance of teamwork and friendship. However, seeing Rin die at Kakashi's hands changed Obito forever and turned him into a monster. The two of them fought against each other in the Fourth Great Ninja War.

4 Vicious and Spike

Vicious is the main antagonist of Cowboy Bebop and given his malevolent nature, it is difficult to imagine that he used to be a normal person, who could fall in love and make friends. Years prior to the story of Cowboy Bebop, Vicious and Spike used to work together.

They were friends, and they rose through the ranks together, but things began to change when they met Julia. Both of them developed feelings for her and when Spike attempted to take Julia with him, Vicious became furious. This started an intense feud between the two, which only ended with their deaths.

3 Suzaku and Lelouch

Suzaku and Lelouch are two of the most important characters in Code Geass. They grew up together and became very close friends. Once Lelouch got his hands on the Geass, he slowly began to execute his plan to overthrow the rule of Britannia.

As fate would have it, Suzaku ended up joining the other side. He became a fighter for Britannia and on many occasions, he stood in Lelouch's way. However, the respect that they had for each other never died.

2 Yagami Light and L Lawliet

Light and L had a rather complex relationship throughout the series. Initially, L was assigned to capture Kira and to put an end to the shocking number of murders taking place all over the world. In order to get close to L, Light decided to infiltrate the secret group.

With L getting ever more suspicious of Light, the latter decided to fake being friends with him. However, the pressure on Light kept on increasing, and he was forced to relinquish ownership of the Death Note. During this small period where Light had no recollection of the events that happened while he had the Death Note, he became good friends with L. As expected, this did not last for long and when Light regained his memories, he sought to kill L once again.

1 Akira and Ryo

Akira and Ryo were almost inseparable as kids. They formed a very good friendship, which proved to be extremely beneficial for Ryo as he learned about human emotions.

The relationship between the two was great, but the revelation about Ryo being Satan changed everything, and shortly afterward, it led to a huge battle that caused the deaths of many people.
