Some game franchises never seem to die, releasing sequel after sequel for decades on end. Others never have a chance to truly flourish, with many great video games never receiving proper sequels, even if the original had strong sales and reviews. Even so, fans hold onto hope they will one day see their most anticipated game sequels officially announced.

While there are many game sequels that have been long-awaited by fans, these are the 10 most notable game sequels we're still waiting for.

10 Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake's Return Teaser Confirmed for Quantum Break - Alan Wake kneeling

With over three million copies sold and releasing to strong reviews, it's a mystery why Remedy Entertainment hasn't moved forward with a full-fledged sequel to Alan Wake. Fans have been clamoring for a follow-up to the unique horror game for years, but Remedy doesn't seem interested in making a sequel. Right now it's busy working on the single player content for Smilegate's CrossFire 2, as well as a mysterious project in development for multiple platforms that is likely a new IP. And with Remedy focusing on multiplayer games for the near future, Alan Wake fans shouldn't hold their breath for a sequel announcement any time soon.

9 Banjo-Threeie

Banjo Kazooie Missing Game

Ever since it was teased at the end of Banjo-Tooie, fans have been waiting to see Banjo-Threeie come to fruition. Unfortunately, the game has yet to have an official announcement, with Rare reviving the bird and bear duo for a divisive vehicle-based entry called Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts instead. Rare is currently working on the pirate-themed multiplayer game Sea of Thieves, so Banjo-Threeie isn't likely to be revealed any time soon, but fans may want to try out the franchise's spiritual successor Yooka-Laylee in the meantime.

8 Borderlands 3

borderlands 3 leak ahead of pax east

Borderlands 3 is a unique entry on this list because it is practically guaranteed to be revealed, we just don't know when. The game has yet to be officially announced by Gearbox Software, though CEO Randy Pitchford has strongly hinted that it is in development, with nearly all of his employees working on the game. Considering the franchise's popularity and strong sales, Borderlands 3 has always seemed like an inevitability, but it remains to be seen when the highly anticipated game will get an official announcement.

7 Bully 2

bully-rockstar-games

Rockstar's library of games typically earn their M rating with gratuitous violence, strong language, drug use, and sexual themes. That's part of the reason why Bully has stuck out, as it retains the studio's signature open world gameplay and sharp satire while making it appropriate for more than just adults. Rumors have been swirling for years that Rockstar has been preparing for a Bully sequel, with the latest one claiming Bully 2 is next up after Red Dead Redemption 2. Anyone that has been waiting for a Bully sequel since the excellent 2006 game should keep their fingers crossed that there's substance to these rumors.

6 Conker's Bad Fur Day 2

Project Spark Will Soon Be Free; Conker's Big Reunion Cancelled - Angry Conker

Like Banjo-KazooieConker's Bad Fur Day is another Rare franchise that has been neglected. Fans have been waiting for a proper Conker's Bad Fur Day sequel since the original released in 2001, but so far all we've gotten are censored remakes and misguided uses of the character, like with the Young Conker HoloLens tech demo. What's worse is that Microsoft has outright teased fans about the foul-mouthed squirrel's return with an E3 appearance that turned out to be nothing more than a Project Spark announcement.

5 Dead Space 4

Dead-Space-Available-Now-on-Xbox-One

Dead Space and Dead Space 2 are often hailed as two of the finest survival-horror games of the previous generation, but the franchise has been dormant since the lackluster third game released in 2013. Regardless, the series has always enjoyed strong sales, and that combined with what appears to be a resurgence in popularity for the horror genre seems like Dead Space 4 would be a no-brainer. Perhaps developer Visceral Games can get to work on Dead Space 4 once it's done working on its mysterious Star Wars project, but that's just wishful thinking.

4 Dino Crisis 4

Dino Crisis Reboot Almost Came from Capcom Vancouver - Dino Crisis PS1 cover art

While Resident Evil will always be Capcom's premiere horror franchise, the studio's Dino Crisis games have earned their fair share of praise as well. Unfortunately, the critically panned Dino Crisis 3 sent the series flying off the rails and it has never recovered, with Capcom failing to greenlight a new entry for well over a decade. Reports indicate that Capcom Vancouver was once approached with the opportunity to develop a Dino Crisis reboot, but nothing ever materialized. Capcom has expressed interest in reviving classic franchises, though, so there is some hope that Dino Crisis 4 will eventually see the light of day.

3 Freedom Fighters 2

Top Original Xbox Games We Want for Backward Compatibility - Freedom Fighters

Praised at the time of its release for its strong AI, squad-based tactical gameplay, and addicting offline multiplayer modes, the original Freedom Fighters has become somewhat of a cult classic over the years. Unfortunately, a sequel has never been announced, with IO Interactive busy working on projects like Kane & Lynch and the more recent Hitman reboot. Now that IO Interactive is independent from Square Enix, perhaps it will team with EA again to finally give the world the Freedom Fighters 2 game fans have been waiting to play.

2 Left 4 Dead 3

The old saying goes that Valve can't count to three. And so far, that's been proven true, with no Portal 3Half-Life 3, or Team Fortress 3 announcements in sight. However, there is some evidence that Left 4 Dead 3 may already exist on some level. A screenshot of a Valve employee's computer last year suggested that Left 4 Dead 3 is in active development at the company, but we haven't seen anything concrete yet.

1 The Elder Scrolls 6

skyrim multiplayer mod together

Bethesda is well aware that fans want The Elder Scrolls 6. Unfortunately for Elder Scrolls enthusiasts, Bethesda seems to be content with re-releasing Skyrim as many times as possible, and as of the time of this writing, we aren't sure what its next open world game will be.

Report: Half-Life 3 May Never Release - Gordon Freeman choked

Besides the games listed here, there are many other game sequels we've been waiting to see for years. Some projects have potential to actually take shape, but others almost seem like impossibilities at this point. That's why we decided to keep Half-Life 3 off this list, as it's looking more and more likely that Valve will never get around to actually developing the game, and so we've more or less given up on ever seeing it release.

On the bright side, other game sequels that once seemed like long-shots may now stand a chance at reaching store shelves. One game that comes to mind is a brand new Crash Bandicoot title, which is much more likely now that Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy has been a top selling product for Activision.

Some of the sequels on this list may one day be developed, whereas others will join the likes of Half-Life 3 as games that will likely never be released. For the sake of gamers, hopefully most of the titles listed here fall in the former category.
