2017 was an exciting year for gamers and some critics are even arguing that it was the best year for the shooter genre in the history of gaming. An early look at the titles in 2018 indicate that fans may be in for an even more exciting year.

From the return of the AAA superhero genre to fresh takes on old franchises, many of 2018's most exciting titles are putting narrative experiences first and plan to deliver high-quality cinematic experiences. That said, there's still some exciting multiplayer games on the horizon, as well...

Here are Game Rant’s 20 Most Anticipated Games of 2018.

20 1. Spider-Man

The end of the Batman Arkham era has left a super hero-sized hole in the world of video games, but luckily Insomniac is on track to fill that void in 2018 with the PS4 exclusive Spider-Man. The AAA action game looks like it perfectly captures both the humor of Peter Parker and the fluid motion of Spider-Man. This is just the latest in a long line of Sony exclusives that make owning a PS4 a requirement for gamers who want to play every game of the year contender.

Spider-Man will launch in 2018, exclusively for PlayStation 4.

19 2. God of War

The God of War franchise is taking the Old Man Logan approach with this rebranding and the early gameplay footage hints that it was a wise decision. The father/son storyline is sure to tug at the heartstrings and will likely lead to some tears, but the classic large-scale action seems to still be as present as ever. This serious take on the franchise after it had risen to cartoony levels of sexuality and violence may be just what is needed to make God of War a must-play series once again.

God of War is set to release in 2018 for PlayStation 4.

18 3. Far Cry 5

The next numbered installment in this bloody franchise moves the terror right into the heartland of the United States. The game's Montana setting generated a lot of buzz during its reveal and it will be interesting to see how the title balances a serious plot about homeland terrorism and its usual outlandish action sequences.

Far Cry 5 is now set to release on March 27, 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

17 4. Red Dead Redemption 2

Ever since Grand Theft Auto 5 ran away with dozens of game of the year awards, fans have been eagerly awaiting the next AAA release from the developer. After months of rumors and leaks, it was finally confirmed that Red Dead Redemption 2 would take players back to the old west for another bloody, violent adventure. After eight long years of waiting, we're definitely ready to saddle up again.

Red Dead Redemption 2 launches in 2018 for PS4 and Xbox One.

16 5. The Last of Us Part 2

There's no guarantee that The Last of Us: Part 2 hits shelves in 2018, but everyone definitely has their fingers crossed. The next feature-length title from Naughty Dog returns to the heartbreaking apocalyptic world we first visited in 2013 and is sure to make players cry just as much. The's game first trailers have sparked conspiracy theories and controversy and even without seeing anything else, the game is already on the must-play list for most PS4 owners.

The Last of Us: Part 2 is in development exclusively for PlayStation 4.

15 6. Detroit: Become Human

Fans tend to love or hate games from David Cage, so everyone is on the edge of their seat to find out where Detroit: Become Human lands on that scale. The title looks like a beautiful choose-your-own-adventure story that focused on a robot revolution. The narrative adventure gameplay style may not be for everyone, but it's going to be hard for fans of a good story to pass this game up.

Detroit: Become Human releases in spring, 2018 exclusively on PS4.

14 7. Days Gone

Zombies are definitely getting old at this point, but Days Gone looks like it will stand out from the crowd. Gamers are both nervous and excited to see how the title's massive hordes appear and run on a regular console, but if it's able to deliver, then it's sure to be a survival experience unlike any that gamers have tackled before.

Days Gone will be released in 2018 and is being developed as a PS4 exclusive.

13 8. Anthem

There's no denying that the Anthem gameplay demo had everyone incredibly excited at E3, but gamers aren't exactly thrilled with BioWare or Electronic Arts at this point. If the game delivers, it could be exactly what each company needs to get back in the good graces of its fans and wash the bad taste of Andromeda and Battlefront 2 out of their mouths. Hopefully, 2018 is a comeback year and Anthem leads the way.

Anthem is currently scheduled to release sometime in the fall of 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

12 9. Kingdom Hearts 3

After years of waiting, the third installment in the Kingdom Hearts franchise is finally arriving in 2018... Knock on wood. The game has been years in the making and even if it wasn't adding the exciting world of Toy Story to the already star-studded cast, this title would still be a must-play for every fan of both Disney and Final Fantasy.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is set to release at some point in 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

11 10. Monster Hunter: World

Gamers in the west will finally experience a current-gen Monster Hunter title with the upcoming release of Monster Hunter: World. The upcoming game puts the focus back on massive open-worlds and fans seem incredibly eager to dive into the action-adventure world.

Monster Hunter: World will launch on January 26th, 2018 for PS4 and Xbox One, with a PC release planned for a later date.

10 11. Crackdown 3

The last entry in this series left a lot to be desired, but hopefully, Crackdown 3 can put things back on the right track. The high octane action game has already been delayed once, but it seems to be on track for a spring release. Hopefully, any kinks have been worked out and the third installment can be a return to greatness for the series.

Crackdown 3 releases in the Spring of 2018 for PC and Xbox One.

9 12. Vampyr

Vampyr has already suffered a delay, but the narrative-driven action RPG is still due for a 2018 release. The game has made a few E3 appearances so far (and will likely make one more) and the interesting setting combined with bloody gameplay footage has fans of RPGs and horror eagerly awaiting an official release date.

Vampyr is slated to release sometime in Q1/Q2 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

8 13. Metro: Exodus

The first installments in the Metro series may not have received a ton of hype, but they were high-quality shooters that can keep even the bravest of gamer on the edge of their seat. The upcoming installment aims to catapult the series into the spotlight with its terrifying dynamic world of horror.

Metro Exodus will be released in fall 2018 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

7 14. Final Fantasy 7 Remake

There is a very solid chance that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake will not be released in 2018, but due to the mysterious release window, it is included on the list anyway. Fans are hopeful that the title will release by the end of 2018, but the development team has been working in secret and updates are few and far between. Whenever the remake finally does arrive, there's no denying that it will be a huge hit.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake is currently in development for PS4.

6 15. Ori and the Will of the Wisps

The surprising sequel to Ori and the Blind Forest is another title that hasn't confirmed a 2018 release yet, but is just too exciting to leave off of the list. The first trailers for Ori and the Will of the Wisps make it very clear that the sequel, like the original, will rip our hearts out with a touching story, beautiful art, and an amazing score. Get the tissues ready, everyone...

Ori and the Will of the Wisps does not yet have a release date, but it will be available on PC and Xbox One.

5 16. Code Vein

It's hard not to be excited about a game that is pitched as an anime-style Dark Souls. Code Vein may be a bit of a gamble, but if the mechanics work well, this could be one of the earliest hits of 2018. There's a chance that the title's buzz will die down by the time award season rolls around, but gamers still need something to play during the first half the year and this seems like a challenging and exciting option.

Code Vein is set to release sometime in early 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

4 17. Dragonball FighterZ

If there's one title that is going to win over players thanks to nostalgia in 2018, it's Dragon Ball FighterZ. This fighting title perfectly captures the aesthetic of the classic anime and fans went nuts during the E3 reveal. The game's original story, throwback visuals, and accessible combo system should be enough to get lots of gamers interested.

Dragon Ball FighterZ releases January 26 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

3 18. Agony

Agony releases March 30, 2018 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

2 19. State of Decay 2

State of Decay 2 is set to release in 2018 for PC and Xbox One.
