Mortal Shell's release earlier this year was met with skepticism. There are a few aspirational studios hoping to make the next Dark Souls, after all, but skepticism gave way to general excitement with Mortal Shell's launch. The game's unique Shell classes, as well as its Hardening mechanic providing brief invulnerability frames, helped it stand out. Mortal Shell developer Cold Symmetry is following up that release with a new free update.

The Mortal Shell 'Rotten Autumn' update is now available to download. It's not an expansion, and Cold Symmetry hasn't confirmed one is in the works as of yet, but it does include some interesting content fans may want to check out. Specifically, it includes 10 Shell shades, which are skins for existing Shells; a dynamic Photo Mode; as well as an expanded OST featuring boss fight music from Greek black metal band Rotting Christ.

The official Mortal Shell Twitter account teases a short "mini-quest," which is likely tied to unlocking the new in-game skins. The accompanying Mortal Shell trailer shows a player going up to the frog NPC Gorf, who is located in Fallgrim. Gorf spits some sort of green mist at the player, which transforms their Shell into something new. Gorf is traditionally used to turn off the music in-game, so it's great to see him getting extra functionality.

Mortal Shell players will have the new DLC automatically downloaded, other than the Rotting Christ boss music. The Rotting Christ music will have to be downloaded separately as DLC, but it's still free. For new players, Mortal Shell is now on sale as part of the Epic Games Store's Halloween sale. Mortal Shell has been discounted 20 percent down to $23.99, though any existing EGS coupons can also be used to bring the price lower.

Mortal Shell is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
