Mortal Shell is one of the big surprise announcements of the summer. Revealed during the PC Gaming Show 2020, Mortal Shell is a Souls-like action RPG that leans into Dark Souls' darker fantasy elements. And now fans can try Mortal Shell for themselves, as a beta version has been made available to everyone on PC.

This past week, Mortal Shell developer Cold Symmetry put out a closed-access demo for its game. The demo was intended to put the game through its ropes, to give players a challenge and to see how well things worked out, but the demand for the demo from Souls fans got to Cold Symmetry and the team's decided to release the demo for free.

For those who want to experience a first look at Mortal Shell, the beta demo includes portions of two different areas. The Fallgrim Outskirts is the first area that players will find themselves in after completing the game's introductory tutorial. The other area is named the Abandoned Chamber, which is a claustrophobic tomb holding the game's first boss.

All players need to access the Mortal Shell beta demo is an Epic Games Store account, as the demo is available solely through the storefront. Luckily, it's entirely free. It's a great opportunity for Souls fans to see if Mortal Shell is the next game they pick up, and they won't have to wait long since it launches this summer.

Mortal Shell releases Q3 2020 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
