Confirmation arrives that Mortal Kombat XL will come to PC, and NetherRealm opens an online beta for players on Steam to iron out any problems before it releases.

Following hints from the director of Mortal Kombat X on Twitter, confirmation finally arrives that Mortal Kombat XL will be released for PCs after all. In addition, NetherRealm Studios is already working on the online experience, opening a beta to PC players.

The Mortal Kombat XL Enhanced Online Beta can now be played on PC via Steam, available from now until August 29th at 10 a.m. PDT. Mortal Kombat XL, which previously came to Xbox One and PS4 players back in March, includes the base game as well as all of the current DLC. However, PC players were left out in the cold, with a NetherRealm spokesperson issuing a statement that Mortal Kombat XL and the Kombat Pack 2 wouldn’t be coming to PC. No cause for the cancellation was ever stated, so gamers can only speculate as to why the developer and publisher are changing their minds now.

Unfortunately, the exact date for Mortal Kombat XL’s official release for PC hasn’t yet been revealed. However, that might be for the best – while Mortal Kombat X was heralded as a hit on consoles, the PC version was stymied by myriads of problems, with some players reporting that they couldn’t play at all due to a streaming install error. Worse still, the patches that were released in an effort to fix some of these problems ended up deleting some players’ save files, ultimately leading to the PC version of Mortal Kombat X receiving mixed reviews.

NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive will most likely take their time carefully working on Mortal Kombat XL to prevent massive errors from ruining the PC port once again. Ed Boon’s latest poll indicates that NetherRealm is looking into GGPO netcode for online matches, which should help to create a nearly lag-free experience for gamers, so that should provide a significant online gameplay improvement over the original release.

Even so, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if even the most dedicated Mortal Kombat fans decide to wait for the initial reviews prior to purchasing Mortal Kombat XL for PC. Although Steam’s return policy should allow gamers to get refunds if the game turns out to be an unplayable mess, having to go through the process would still be a hassle. One can hope that Warner Bros. Interactive has already learned its lesson in releasing terrible PC ports between Mortal Kombat X and Batman: Arkham Knight, but there’s no harm in being cautious.
