After months of anticipation, Mortal Kombat X finally released last week to praise from fans and critics alike. The game has proven to be so popular that it has already smashed franchise sales records becoming the fastest selling Mortal Kombat game ever. As Mortal Kombat X continues to burn up the sales charts, many fans are wondering if their favorite characters will ever make a return to the Mortal Kombat X roster. Series creator, Ed Boon, may have just hinted at some characters potentially coming back. In answering a fan question over Twitter, Ed Boon left a cryptic hint about a potential “Story Pack” after being asked if any of the non-playable characters would be patched into Mortal Kombat X at a later date. Known as someone who enjoys “trolling” fans, Boon left off any potential details, leaving players to speculate as to what exactly he meant. While the current Mortal Kombat X roster is full of new and returning characters, there are a number of series favorites that didn’t make the cut such as Baraka, Rain, Frost, Sindel, Smoke, and Kabal to name a few. Interestingly enough, many of these characters make appearances during the story mode with some even fighting against the player. It’s because of this that fans have begun to speculate that NetherRealm Studios plans to add them to the roster at some point.
Bringing back a number of fan favorite characters in a future DLC pack does make sense as not only does it tap into fan nostalgia, but these characters already appear in the main story mode. While none of them currently feature any variations like the current roster, NetherRealm did spend development time to model, render, and flesh out each of these characters enough to include them in the story. Tanya, a character revealed in the upcoming Kombat Pack, makes a similar appearance in the Mortal Kombat X campaign as players actually fight her within the story, though currently she does not have any style variations. Modders on the PC version of the game have already gone one step further by making a few of these characters playable. Through updating a few files within the game’s assets folder, reddit user XVermillion was able to “trick” the game into thinking he was using a normal roster character but instead was actually using Rain’s moves and character model. This user was able to repeat the process for Sindel and Baraka as well. Who would you like to see included in a potential “Story Pack” DLC? Let us know below in the comments. Mortal Kombat X is now available for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. It’s scheduled to release this summer for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Source: Ed Boon’s Twitter
