Mortal Kombat X, the highly anticipated fighting game from NetherRealm Studios, has been in the news a lot recently – although perhaps not always for the reasons the publisher would like. With excitement riding high as the game nears its release, the major concern left with players seems to be over which characters made the final roster.

As rumors, leaks, and blatant teasing of potential characters occur more frequently heading towards launch, NetherRealm decided to put some of the speculation to rest by releasing a new trailer that has confirmed a handful of rumored fighters.

NetherRealm's latest trailer reintroduces series veterans Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, and Kenshi to Mortal Kombat X and shows off their increased role within the title. While Kenshi isn't actually seen outside of cutscenes in the trailer, gameplay footage of both Sonya and Johnny Cage are shown as the characters perform some brutal X-Ray moves on their opponents. For an added twist, Johnny Cage's darkly humorous fatality is also teased near the end of the video. Eagle-eyed players will also see brief glimpses of other characters like Shinnok and an evil looking Jax as well.

Fans will be happy to know that Mortal Kombat X features another ambitious and detailed story mode seen in NetherRealm's previous efforts, with each chapter focusing on a particular character. Light-quick time events have also been added into some of the cutscenes as reported during one of the fights in Johnny Cage's chapter. Interestingly enough, reports also indicate that previously unannounced characters have been spotted making cameos throughout the game. They include Nightwolf, Fujin, Stryker, Kabal, and Smoke.

It's interesting having Johnny Cage back in the line up considering that his daughter, Cassie Cage, features a variation based on his abilities. With Jade confirmed to not be in the game and her moves being given to Kitana's Mournful variation, it's a little surprising to see a character with a similar arsenal as a newcomer returning to the roster. Either way, it should be interesting to see Cassie go up against her parents.

Given that the story has been confirmed to take place 25 years after the events of the last game, players are understandably curious to see how older veteran characters like Kenshi, Johnny, and Sonya eventually gave way to their kids, who were introduced in the previous story trailer. With so many deaths happening in the previous title, gamers are also wondering how certain characters in this game managed to return for this installment. Thankfully, fans won't have to wait too much longer to find out.

Are you surprised that Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade are back? Who else are you hoping to see make the final roster?

Mortal Kombat X releases for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC on April 14, 2015.
