Mortal Kombat X Johnny Cage

While the Mortal Kombat franchise is known for its balls to the wall brutalities, fans are also chomping at the bit to know just who will be dealing them. The character roster has been a much talked about feature ever since the latest MK game, Mortal Kombat X, was announced. So far we have seen Sweet Tooth, Spawn and even the deadly Predator teased and we here at Game Rant have also added our own predictions into the mix.

There have been hints at more characters from the Mortal Kombat comic book, screenshots and a voice recording sessions suggested a return for Sonya Blade and Jax and this is all on top of the already confirmed roster of old favourites that includes Reptile, Kitana and Scorpion. All of the names may seem overwhelming for newcomers to the over the top fighting series but existing fans will be happy to see that there is (apparently) no limit to just how many characters Mortal Kombat X will feature.

Also rubbing his hands in glee over Mortal Kombat X's character roster is the game's director, Ed Boon. A notorious tease, Boon is responsible for many of those aforementioned hints. Still not satisfied with having already whipped MK fans into a frenzy, he's back at it again, this time suggesting that the cage family could be included in the next game.

Mortal Kombat X Cassie

In a tweet, Boon shared a simple photo of a cage. A photo of a cage could allude to either Johnny or Cassie Cage but Boon soon replied to an overenthusiastic fan to confirm that he was talking about Cassie, not her father Johnny. In a gameplay video that has just been released, developer NetherRealm Studios talks through Cassie's variations, explaining that they didn't want to have "some Johnny Cage moves, some Sonya moves; having a daughter of two characters that have been in the games for so many years we wanted to give her her own unique fight style and gameplay feel"

The developer also notes that one of Cassie's moves has a hint of Johnny's iconic 'Shadow Kick' move and although she doesn't really 'need' to use it, it helps to show her heritage. There are also moves that are exclusive to each of her three variations: Hollywood Cassie Cage, Spec Ops Cassie Cage and Brawler Cassie Cage. The variations are nice as they are but for those used to Johnny and Sonya's play styles, this will hopefully give Cassie some individuality.

This is especially important as her dad may also be included in the game. Following the confirmation of Cassie, Ed Boon also tweeted the above image; a book cover that reads "REST OF THE STORY". Given that mother and daughter Sonya and Cassie will be included in Mortal Kombat X, it's unlikely that Boon is referring to any other character than Johnny Cage. At Gamescom last year Boon told Total Xbox that “part of the magic of introducing Cassie Cage is to see her interact with her mother, Sonya, and father, Johnny Cage. I think it would be, story-wise, a lost opportunity if we didn’t show that" which also seems to suggest that Johnny will be the next big, Mortal Kombat X character reveal.

The reveal will go live at 2PM GMT, 6AM PST and 9AM EST on Friday February 27, so expect more news on that then.

Mortal Kombat X releases April 14, 2015 for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
