Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon teases fans on Twitter that the studio has big news to reveal about Mortal Kombat X this week and could be coming as soon as today.

Mortal Kombat X has enjoyed a very successful year on the market, quickly becoming the fastest selling game in the series and just recently launching a complete edition known as Mortal Kombat XL which brings together every piece of downloadable content and enhancements into one convenient package. Better yet, console owners of the core game could even upgrade to the XL version for a reduced price. While many believed this would be the end of the road for the game in terms of post-launch content, it appears that Ed Boon and the crew at NetherRealm Studios are not as finished with the game as originally believed.

As he so often likes to do, NetherRealm Studio boss, Ed Boon, is once again riling up the Mortal Kombat faithful promising ‘big’ news sometime today. A few more cryptic Tweets followed which may or may not have anything to do regarding the announcement such as the reveal that over 500,000 copies of Mortal Kombat X have been sold on PC and that ‘Rain’ is not in the forecast, indicating that everyone’s favorite purple ninja probably isn’t part of the announcement. Finally, a new living tower has been revealed, teasing a mystery boss character at the top of the structure.

With Boon however, it’s entirely possible that none of these Tweets have anything to do with the announcement. It is worth noting that Friday is April 1st, better known as April Fools Day, and with as much as Boon enjoys trolling the fanbase, something could be brewing under the surface. Then again, gamers have seen April Fools Day material end up turning into something real, so any is possible at this point.

The news about the total copies sold on PC is an interesting reveal, especially coming from Boon, as recently, the PC version of the game has been a pretty large blemish for the studio. Originally ported to PC by a third party studio, gamers quickly realized that the title had technical and server based problems at launch unlike the console version which ran fine. While the issues were eventually resolved, things deteriorated again when it was revealed that the second DLC pack and online enhancements would not be coming to PC at all, leaving those players out in the cold.

What do you think the special announcement is? Could it be another Kombat Pack, additional content, or perhaps the long awaited PC version enhancements and DLC content? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments.

Mortal Kombat X is available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
