Mortal Kombat fans’ long wait for more blood will finally be over next month, when Mortal Kombat X releases on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Developer NetherRealm Studios has been gradually revealing playable characters over the last few months, and the latest sequel is set to launch with two dozen fighters, a mix of old classics and new characters like Cassie Cage and Kung Jin.
But there may still be more surprises in store. Only yesterday a posting on the Xbox One store accidentally outed the Predator as a playable character for Mortal Kombat X through DLC, and earlier this week a set of leaked screenshots confirmed the return of Baraka, Shinnok, and several others. Now there are hints that even more classic characters will be back for Mortal Kombat X.
NetherRealm hosted a demo stream of Mortal Kombat X yesterday, and IGN spotted something noteworthy. Among all the expected modifiers, the demo also listed Stryker Assist, Smoke Assist, Rain Assist, Kabal Assist, Kabal Blades, and Cyrax Bombs. These all hint at characters not yet confirmed to be a part of the Kombat sequel. You can see screen captures from the demo stream below.
So far the Mortal Kombat X lineup hasn’t included any hints of Cyrax, Kabal, Rain, Smoke, or Stryker. And to be fair, these characters might show up only as assists, or simply as little tips of the hat to the franchise’s history. But it wouldn’t be at all surprising to learn that NetherRealm was holding these characters back as a further surprise, whether they come playable with the core game or are added later as DLC.
Cyrax, Kabal, and Stryker first appeared in Mortal Kombat 3 back in 1995. Rain was first playable in 1996’s Mortal Kombat Trilogy, and Smoke’s origins trace all the way back to Mortal Kombat II, when he was a hidden playable opponent. With an even two dozen playable characters included in the core Mortal Kombat X game, it’s most likely that these five characters will be available as part of the core game, assuming their reference is more than just a simple Easter egg. All five have ties to the early days of the franchise, so they would certainly fit with Mortal Kombat X‘s blend of the old and the new.
If Cyrax, Kabal, Rain, Smoke, and Stryker join the Mortal Kombat line-up, they’ll have some celebrities to face off against as well. In addition to this week’s leak of the Predator as a playable character, NetherRealm had previously revealed Friday the 13th‘s Jason Voorhees would be diving into the carnage as well. Both Predator and Jason will be available as part of a post-release DLC pack that will also include two other so-far-unrevealed characters. Earlier rumors suggested the comic-book character Spawn might be a possibility, or even Twisted Metal racer Sweet Tooth. Expect more big reveals in the final weeks leading up to Mortal Kombat X‘s release.
Mortal Kombat X releases April 14, 2015 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions have been delayed.
