As is often the case, online fandom is typically rife with speculation when it comes to what's on deck for their favorite franchises, and fighting game aficionados are not exempt as far as their theories are concerned with Mortal Kombat. Just recently, in fact, scuttlebutt began swirling not too long ago about NetherRealm Studios currently working on a sequel to MK vs DC Universe, which has led to Ed Boon dismissing the rumor as false.

It appears as if this speculation all started once Ed Boon changed his Twitter avatar to depict the faces of both Mortal Kombat's Scorpion and the DC Universe's Batman, which caused fans to wonder if if MK vs DC Universe 2 is in the cards. As seen in the tweet below, the NetherRealm Studios Creative Director denied that the studio's next game is MKvsDC2, and also said that the rumors surrounding the next Mortal Kombat movie are inaccurate as well.

While Boon has rejected the rumors about Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe 2 being in development, it's worth noting that the NetherRealm Studios Creative Director is quite active on Twitter, and oftentimes just enjoys messing with fans. When we spoke to Boon an interview, he was quick to admit that trolling other users online is supremely entertaining. With this being the case, it's highly likely that he knew people would start talking about a potential MKvsDC2 as soon as he changed his avatar.

Taking all of this into account, although it looks like Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe 2 won't be happening any time soon, there is a chance that Boon could be delivering another numbered entry in the MK franchise at some point in the near future. About a couple of months ago, in fact, the Injustice 2 director potentially teased a new Mortal Kombat is coming.
