In 1996, Midway published Mortal Kombat Trilogy, which was an updated version of Mortal Kombat 3 that featured content from the original Mortal Kombat as well as Mortal Kombat 2. Mortal Kombat Trilogy gave fans of NetherRealm's fighting game franchise the chance to play as characters from all three games that released at that point and made a number of new gameplay innovations that helped it become one of the franchise's more popular console releases. Considering this, it's understandable that fans would want to see the game made available on modern platforms.

No one involved with the Mortal Kombat franchise in an official capacity has given any indication that a Mortal Kombat Trilogy remake could be in the works, but fans are calling for it to happen. A petition posted to Change.org is asking for a Mortal Kombat Trilogy remake using Unreal Engine 5. The petition was created by a developer called Eyeballistic that is said to have gotten the support of Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon to produce a Mortal Kombat Trilogy remake back in 2016, only for the idea to get shot down by Warner Bros. Interactive as the publisher was apparently unconvinced that the game would sell enough to justify the costs of making it.

Eyeballistic says that it is currently contracted to make games for next-gen consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X as well as the Nintendo Switch, and that it has tech that would make a Mortal Kombat Trilogy remake a worthwhile experience. In the petition, Eyeballistic boasts about its rollback tech that will allow for "incredibly smooth play across great distances" and talks about its plan to use Epic Online Services to allow crossplay.

If Eyeballistic is given the chance to create a Mortal Kombat Trilogy remake, its goal is to recreate the game in 3D using Unreal Engine 5, with 4K resolution and 60 frames per second gameplay, new music, online multiplayer support, and leaderboards. The plan would be to release the game for $39.99 on PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X, with Eyeballistic planning to approach Warner Bros. Interactive with a crowdfunding plan if the petition manages to get 100,000 signatures.

The petition has amassed 15,457 signatuares at the time of this writing with new signatures added every few minutes. The petition was originally started three months ago, but it is just now getting attention and picking up steam. It's unclear if it will hit its goal of obtaining 100,000 signatures, however.

There were rumors that a Mortal Kombat Trilogy remaster was in the works in an official capacity, but nothing ever materialized. In the meantime, Mortal Kombat fans are patiently waiting to see what's next from NetherRealm Studios, as it has yet to reveal its next project.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy is available on Nintendo 64, PC, PS1, Saturn, and other legacy platforms.
