If there is one thing that's become known in the last decades of gaming, it's that Mortal Kombat needs no introduction. While a large amount of early MK fans have since moved on to more 'sophisticated' titles like Marvel Vs. Capcom or Street Fighter, there is simply no way to put a price on nostalgia. Many fans may have moved on from the franchise while it struggled to find its way among current consoles, but NetherRealm Studios is hoping that will change with their upcoming series reboot.

While outsiders may falsely assume that the reason that so many adolescent gamers flocked to the franchise way back in the days of the Sega Genesis was the blood and guts, real fans know the truth. It wasn't the blood and guts by themselves, but the way the series completely embraced insanity and over-the-top martial arts that made the game more than just a display of gore- it made it fun.

While the first looks we've had at the upcoming MK reboot clearly show that the violence and insane combat that the series hold so dear will be on full display, story is  also going to be playing a part. Fighters have to deliver some lines before and after a fight, so what better place for some character development?

Have a look at the motivations that the team has cooked up for the new (and improved?) Sub-Zero:

There's no understating it: the combat in this game is ridiculous. Not only does the trailer give a look at some of the various ice attacks that the new Sub-Zero will be unleashing on his opponents, but also a quick peak at how the attacks can be combined with different characters tagging in and out. There's nothing wrong with a little brotherly drama used to heighten the action, but nothing will be able to top freezing an enemy's feet into place and letting loose.

Hopefully the other revealed characters will soon be given their own trailers, since Sub-Zero and Scorpion's trailer have certainly got us salivating.

We'll have to wait a little longer to get our ice on, as Mortal Kombat's reboot will be released some time in the first half of 2011 on the Xbox 360 and PS3.
