Sonya Blade is one of the most important characters in Mortal Kombat. As the first female fighter of the series, Sonya broke ground along with Chun Li in fighting games to show that the fairer sex can kick just as much ass as their male counterparts. As well with appearances in over 10 MK titles, movies, TV shows and more, Sonya has had a ton of costumes throughout the franchise history.

But which are the best ones? Which are the worst? We rank them down from the dregs to the top tier outfits.

10 Movie Costume

While the original Mortal Kombat film isn't perfect by any means, it's still a cheesy enjoyable time with some decent fight scenes (particularly the ones with Robin Shou as Liu Kang). However, Sonya Blade's outfit in the movie does a massive disservice to the character.

Rounding out the bottom of the list, Sonya actually has multiple looks in the movie but they're all terrible. Their main sin is that they're incredibly bland as they're all different kinds of black and white shorts, tops and accessories. It seems more like Sonya is following dress code at her high school and that's just incredibly lame. She doesn't look good or like a military commander.

9 Mortal Kombat 1

Part of us wants to pay respect to the original game's outfit for the first lady of Mortal Kombat, but we can't put this outfit any higher.

Not only does the outfit make her look painfully generic, but it doesn't fit with her character at all. As a Special Forces officer, it makes little sense for her to wear spandex with no weapons on her body to speak of. Keep in mind that while we went with the recreation of the costume in MKX for the image, the one from the 1992 original didn't even have the guns shown above. With a bland look like this, it's obvious that Blade was the last character added to the original game.

8 Mortal Kombat 9

When Mortal Kombat (sorta) rebooted in 2011 with the release of Mortal Kombat on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, the series had new life breathed into it and was immensely successful. But Sonya's outfit in the game leaves a lot to be desired. Mainly, fabric.

Just what the heck were the Special Forces handing out to their female officers back in Earthrealm? Not only is the cleavage window simply ridiculous for what is meant to be a military uniform, but the whole ensemble seems more like something she would wear in the bedroom with Johnny Cage rather than fight in. Granted that it is more stylish than the previous entries, but this is still ridiculous.

7 Mortal Kombat 3

As with the entry about her MK 1 costume, we're going to showcase the modernized version of a classic game's attire for image quality purposes. But let's take a look at her MK 3 era attire.

By taking a quick glance, we can see that it shares a lot of similarities to her first game's look but with some subtle improvements. Not only is her hair tied back, but the color scheme of the outfit makes it pop out more than her MK 1 look. The belt and gloves also give her a more distinct look instead of having her look less like a pure martial artist like her first costume did. Still, the spandex is a bit ridiculous and is not befitting of a military commander.

6 Mortal Kombat 4

It's at this point of the list that we'd like to remind you that even though Mortal Kombat 4 looks dated as hell, we're trying to focus more on the designs of the outfits above all else. Having said that, Sonya's MK4 outfit is the final refinement of her 90s looks and it's pretty solid.

Strapped with combat boots, a stylish belt and a bandolier around her thigh, Sonya came for a fight in MK's first 3D outing. Her cap also shows she means business and is no mood to play around. While this would serve as a nice base, other future outfits would improve on this.

5 Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance Alternate

A lot of credit has to be given here for trying something completely different with Sonya's alternate costume in Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance.

While many of her outfits are derivative of each other, this one instead goes for more of a World War II era look with the beige and we think it fits her well.  It gets docked a few points for not looking like something Sonya would fight and more something that she would wear while at Special Forces HQ, but it's still a nice change of pace.

4 Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks

Possibly the most underrated Mortal Kombat game ever, Shaolin Monks was the only spin-off game worth discussion and while Sonya Blade didn't play a huge part in the game, she was given a slight redesign from her look in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance but in our opinion, it is a downgrade.

Sporting a black top, brown midriff jacket and military camouflage pants, this "back to basics" look for the Special Forces officer is solid but a bit uninspired.

3 Mortal Kombat 10

MKX was the first MK game to be on the current generation of consoles and with it came a massive jump in the quality of the graphics. But Sonya's base costume in the game ranks somewhere in the middle of the pack.

At the very least, Sonya now looks like who she is supposed to be: a fierce, no-nonsense military officer. She also is clearly well equipped and protected for battle with tons of weapons, gadgets and protection. However, the all-black look seems a tad generic and lacks the pop of other costumes you'll see later on the list. Still a massive improvement from the last game however.

2 Mortal Kombat 11 (Army Dangerous Variation)

With all the gear that players can equip to their fighters in MK11, it's hard to remember sometimes what the regular, unedited costumes look like. And that's a shame because Sonya's default outfit is a damn good one.

Gone is the all-black from MKX in favor of a navy blue color scheme, Sonya comes packing here with guns, blasters attached to her gloves, a rocking jacket and more gadgets on her belt. Her Special Forces hat and dog tags are also nice symbols of her allegiance and the whole package comes together greatly.

1 Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance

We are well aware that the 3D era of Mortal Kombat is highly divisive to fighting game fans, but you have to give credit where it's due: Sonya's outfit in Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance kicks ass.

Rocking leather pants, a midriff jacket adorned with various patches symbolizing her time with the Special Forces and the U.S Army, and a stylish belt, this outfit is a treat for the eyes. It is true that it's not the most "combat ready" outfit, but the ensemble comes together so well that we have no choice but to bestow upon it a medal of honor for best Sonya costume.
