'Mortal Kombat' Shang Tsung Trailer Released

Mortal Kombat Shang Tsung Trailer

Mortal Kombat is almost here, and the release date cannot get here soon enough. Everything shown so far for Warner Bros. Interactive and NetherRealm Studios' eagerly anticipated release has only increased the desire to own this game even more. With still plenty more hidden away, it's no wonder why Mortal Kombat can considered one of the most anticipated games of the year. While there isn't a lot of time left to wait for the game's arrival, there are still a few things left to tide fans over. One is a new trailer showing off long-time series villain, Shang Tsung.

They say that every great hero is not complete without a great villain. If Liu Kang is the great hero of Mortal Kombat, then Shang Tsung is his great villain. The rivalry between the two has lasted throughout the entire series, each of them gaining significant victories over the other. Shang Tsung has proven to be a truly evil being, manipulative and treacherous, greedily gaining power in his quest for immortality. Whether as an unassuming old man, or the malicious snake that he is, you can rest assured that Shang Tsung's loyalties will always be to himself.

This newest trailer shows off both his soul-stealing and shapeshifting abilities to their fullest. It also hints at one of his fatalities, and shows off his X-Ray move. Not really sure how he absorbs the opponent's skin temporarily, but you can't go wrong with a solid knee to the face.

It's not as funny as Johnny Cage's vignette, but like the other Mortal Kombat trailers, it also hints at Shang Tsung's role in the story. It doesn't appear to be much more than Shao Kahn's second-in-command, but knowing his character, he would certainly be trying to overthrow his master and take the realms for himself. The question is if he would succeed or not, considering this is an alternate timeline and anything could happen. There's also the question of whether or not an alliance with Quan Chi would come into play.

What are your thoughts on the trailer? What role will Shang Tsung have in the game's story? What could his fatality be?

Mortal Kombat is set for release on April 19, 2011 in North America, and April 21, 2011 in other parts of the world, for the Xbox 360 and PS3.
