There have been numerous Mortal Kombat games over the years. Besides the main series of fighting games, there have been a wide range of Mortal Kombat spin-off games, taking fan favorite characters and testing them in different genres. One of the most popular Mortal Kombat spin-off games has to be Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, a co-op beat 'em up starring Liu Kang and Kung Lao that sold well and earned strong reviews. And now Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks fans have renewed hope that they may eventually get a remaster.

On June 2, Ed Boon posted a pool saying "Remaster .... ?" and listing various Mortal Kombat games. Boon gave Mortal Kombat fans four games to choose from, including Mortal Kombat: DeceptionMortal Kombat 2Mortal Kombat 9, and of course, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Nearly 140,00 Twitter users have voted in the poll at the time of this writing, with 46.8% voting in favor of a Shaolin Monks remaster, 28.1% voting for a Mortal Kombat 9 remaster, 14.1% hoping to see a Mortal Kombat: Deception remaster, and just 10.9% wanting a Mortal Kombat 2 remaster.

It must be stressed that this doesn't mean a remaster of any of these games is in actual development. Boon could just be testing the waters to see if there is genuine interest in any of these games getting remastered or he could simply be trolling fans. Ed Boon is known for trolling Mortal Kombat fans with his tweets, so it certainly wouldn't be out of character.

As expected, Boon's poll has captured the attention of a lot of Mortal Kombat fans, especially those wanting to see a Shaolin Monks remaster. This resulted in Shaolin Monks becoming one of the top Twitter trends in the United States and prompting a reaction from Boon.

In the past, Boon has admitted that NetherRealm has talked about Mortal Kombat remasters, so it's entirely possible that one or more of these games could get remastered. Nothing concrete has been announced, though, so fans of the franchise should keep their expectations in check.

There would be some merit to remastering any of these games. Shaolin Monks offers a unique co-op experience for Mortal Kombat fans, whereas Deception is generally considered one of the best games in the series. The same can be said for Mortal Kombat 2, though one would think that a remaster of that game would be better served packaged together with the other old-school MK titles in a Mortal Kombat trilogy collection.

Mortal Kombat 9 would also make a lot of sense. After all, Mortal Kombat 9 started the reboot story that concluded with Mortal Kombat 11, so remastering it would help bring it to all modern platforms and make it easier for fans to experience the full story. As it stands, NetherRealm hasn't actually announced its next video game, so fans will just have to stay tuned for more information.

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is out now for PS2 and Xbox.
