While Mortal Kombat 11 and the recent Terminator DLC are currently being enjoyed by many Mortal Kombat fans, plenty of players are still holding out for remasters of years-old favorites. To provide some hope for those fans, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon spoke on the topic of remasters at a Q&A at the Brazil Game Show.
Many past Mortal Kombat games hold a special place in the hearts of long-time fans. Such games include titles like Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks, among others, that would likely make a ton of those fans incredibly happy.
Boon stated at the Brazil Game Show that Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm has "talked about doing remasters of some of the older games, you know Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks was one of the ones that have been asked for doing a remastered version and in we’re thinking of it." Boon clarified that there is nothing being announced at the moment, so fans shouldn't be getting their hopes up too high.
Boon's final clarification signals that Boon's teased "big surprise" in 2020 has nothing to do with a remaster of Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks, at least. However, the surprise is even more ambiguous than that, as it is unclear whether the surprise is necessarily Mortal Kombat-related.
For unaware players, Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks was released in 2005 on Xbox and PlayStation 2 to mostly good reception. However, the game is different from its numbered counterparts in that it ditches the series' traditional one-on-one fighting game style for beat 'em up mechanics in an action-adventure setup. While traditional Mortal Kombat games have seen massive success, as illustrated by the prediction of Mortal Kombat 11 as being one of 2019's best-selling games, Shaolin Monks still stands as a beloved title among long-time fans of the series.
It's still interesting to think about the 2020 surprise teased by Ed Boon. If it's not necessarily Mortal Kombat-related, having to do with remasters or not, then it could be possible that NetherRealm is introducing a new property altogether. It would be interesting to see the developer tread territory far outside the realm of fighting games after all.
Mortal Kombat 11 is currently available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
