After delivering a pretty fantastic Mortal Kombat short film, it looks like Kevin Tancharoen has landed himself a job for Warner Bros. In conjunction with the upcoming release of the Mortal Kombat reboot, Tanchareon and Warner Bros. will be delivering a series of digital shorts that tell various stories within the Mortal Kombat universe.

For those that might not have had a chance to see it, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth was a proof of concept short film created by Tancharoen in hopes of landing a job making a MK feature film. While the story and character design were all top notch for a self-produced short, what was most impressive was Tancharoen’s ability to create a believable world within the confines of the hyper-real Mortal Kombat universe.

This new series, also titled Rebirth, will not follow the storyline of the Rebirth short but will instead be a chance to introduce gamers to the various characters within the new Mortal Kombat game. Old favorites like Scorpion, Jax (whose role will be reprised by Michael Jai White), and Mileena will have new light shed on their motivations and histories as realized by this new iteration of the popular fighting game.

With only three months to work on the new digital series, but probably a wider variety of resources at his fingertips, Tancharoen certainly has his work cut out for him. Planning to shoot in February, with some casting news rumored to be hitting soon after this announcement, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth is a chance for Tancharoen to officially land that Mortal Kombat movie directing gig.

Mortal Kombat, the reboot, along with Mortal Kombat: Rebirth should be available sometime in April. There has been no word on whether or not the digital shorts will be free. Considering the popularity of the Rebirth proof of concept, and fans' desire to obtain some back-story on their favorite characters, if the series were to go for a small pittance, it could still potentially sell well. Keep your eyes peeled for more news regarding the digital series as it comes down.

Would you be interested in forking over a couple bucks to check out these new Mortal Kombat digital shorts? Do you think there is still a market itching for a Mortal Kombat feature film?
