When one makes a game that manages to get really popular, break sales records, become a best-seller, and so on, it's expected of the company to make a sequel. And when said game is the latest of a long-running franchise, such as Mortal Kombat, the expectations are even more prominent. And considering that Mortal Kombat won the Spike Video Game Award for Best Fighting Game this year, it makes even more sense that a sequel would be in development as soon as possible.
But as it turns out, the folks at NetherRealm Studios will actually be giving the series something of a break.
Don't worry, this doesn't mean that the series is done for good. Ed Boon explained that they would make another Mortal Kombat game in the future. For now, however, they want to focus on other projects. What those projects were wasn't explained, but it will most definitely be interesting to see what they turn out to be when more information surfaces. Boon followed up on this by saying that there wouldn't be any more downloadable content for Mortal Kombat, further showing their intent to move on.
The "no new downloadable content" news is a bit surprising, given the leak regarding a Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition. However, that may just be a collection of the downloadable content already available. We'll have to wait and see for ourselves. As for NetherRealm Studios's next project, it seems likely that it'll have to do with something concerning Warner Bros. Interactive's IPs.
The most likely candidate is another Batman game, as that is Warner Bros's most popular franchise right now. NetherRealm Studios already released a title in the series for IOS devices called Batman: Arkham City Lockdown, which had Batman get into one-on-one fights with numerous members of his rogue's gallery, such as Joker, Two-Face, and Deathstroke. It's safe to say that another fighting game by these guys that features members of the Batman universe would be a hot seller - though, it is possible that they could work on another character from the DC Universe, considering Warner Bros. Montreal is working on more.
What do you think the next project will be for NetherRealm Studios? When will the next Mortal Kombat game be put into development?
