The upcoming Mortal Kombat movie is steadily approaching release as production continues to roll along, despite similar films like Warner Bros' new Batman hitting delays recently. However, while it looks like the new movie is still almost a full year from release, it looks like the release will be well worth the wait, according to reports from one of the actors starring in the film.

Mehcad Brooks, the actor portraying Jax, sat down with podcaster Duncan Trussell to talk about the Mortal Kombat movie, and gave viewers an inside look at how the film plans to approach violence. From the actor's reports, it seems like the live action movie will take a far different approach from both the games, and the ultra-violent Scorpion's Revenge animated film expected to release later this year.

According to Brooks, the Mortal Kombat movie is going for a more realistic approach to the violence in the movie, as opposed to the over-the-top action that has become a staple of the modern games. This 'grounded realism' is something that Brooks mentioned as being part of his way of tapping into the character of Jax and how he has become obsessed with violence and killing as a master assassin. However, this doesn't mean that the movie won't contain some of the brutal fatalities from the games that has earned the series its place as one of the most vicious fighting game of al time.

This isn't the first time that someone involved with the upcoming movie has hinted that the action will have a more realistic than the games that inspire it. Mortal Kombat producer Todd Garner teased CGI being used for some of the deadlier scenes, but much of the combat will rely more heavily on the actor's talents as martial artists than special effects. With such a focus on a more grounded experience in the film, the new movie's action will likely soar above and beyond the original entries from the franchise.

While the Mortal Kombat movie is still almost a year out from release, it is still one of the most highly anticipated video game movies preparing to hit theaters. The grounded approach of the new film will hopefully be well received by fans, even though deviating from establishing conventions can sometimes be harmful when dealing with long running franchises. That being said, when it comes to a live action film, a more realistic portrayal of the combat is likely the right choice to make an overall better movie.

Mortal Kombat is set to release in theaters on January 15th, 2021.
