Mortal Kombat 11 fans will be excited to hear that instead of one Mortal Kombat film going into production, there are now two. A new Mortal Kombat movie has just been announced, an animated film to go alongside the currently in-production live-action film. The project's name is Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge and it will feature a broad selection of Mortal Kombat's most popular fighters. The cartoon is set to release in the first half of 2020.

A good portion of Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge's cast has already been announced. Headlining will be Community's  Joel McHale in the role of Johnny Cage, alongside Dexter's Jennifer Carpenter in the role of Sonya Blade. Other Mortal Kombat fighter confirmed for the film include Goro, Jax, Kano, Kitana, Liu Kang, Quan Chi, Raiden, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion, too. Scorpion's name is in the title, after all. It wouldn't be surprising if the cast is even larger than this, however.

As for what kind of quality fans should expect from Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge, the film's being produced by the Warner Bros. Animation team. The producer is Rick Morales, best known for directing the Batman: Return of the Caped Crusader and Batman vs. Two-Face films in 2016 and 2017. More recently, he's produced several Lego Scooby-Doo! and Lego DC Super Hero Girls projects. There's a lot of experience behind Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge, but it's not necessarily a theatrical-quality animated film.

Left un-detailed is Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge's story. Going off of the title, it would seem to imply a more focused story looking into Scorpion's past. Yet the size of the cast shows that the story will do much more than focus on Scorpion alone. Scorpion's backstory may simply be the main story thread of the film, but will expand beyond that as it goes along.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge will become the second Mortal Kombat film being currently developed. The other, simply named Mortal Kombat, will be a live-action martial arts film and is planned to be released in 2021. The film will serve as a reboot to the popular 1995 Mortal Kombat film and its 1997 sequel Annihilation. The film's director is Simon McQuoid in his first feature film role.

It seems the success of the Mortal Kombat 11 video game is leading to a major cross-media push for the brand again in 2020 and beyond.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge will be released in the first half of 2020.
