A movie based on the Mortal Kombat franchise is currently in development for 2021 under the direction of Simon McQuoid; one that will have more realistic violence than the games according to Mehcad Brooks, the actor playing Jax. However the film's co-producer Todd Garner took to Twitter yesterday, telling fans the ongoing coronavirus pandemic could impact its release.

His comment came in response to an eager Mortal Kombat fan asking if the coronavirus situation will delay the movie, which is a reboot of the often derided films from the 90s. Garner said, "Unfortunately no one knows anything at this moment," but promised that he will share more information as soon as he knows for sure.

Regardless of the reboot's fate, those who need an extra dose of live-action Mortal Kombat will be able to stream Paul W.S. Anderson's 1995 film on Netflix starting April 1, 2020, alongside the Matrix trilogy and a number of other movies. The 1995 Mortal Kombat will not include modern series staples like x-ray attacks and crushing blows that Garner has teased will be in the 2021 reboot, but it should still make for a fun time as people self-quarantine.

Mortal Kombat has been in the news often recently, as multiple potential DLC fighters have leaked for Mortal Kombat 11 following the introduction of Image Comics' Spawn. The Spawn update has also introduced a number of skins for different characters that reference popular movies, such as an outfit based on Alien for Jacqui Briggs and another based on Indiana Jones for Erron Black.

However, fans of Mortal Kombat have also lost access to content within the last week. Warner Bros. removed Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition from Steam on March 21 for unknown reasons, though anyone who owned the game previously can still access the repackaged 2011 game and its DLC.

With all of that Mortal Kombat in the news, no doubt hype for a redone take on the series for the silver screen is at an all-time high. The new movie has a lot to rectify from its predecessors, and hopefully, the pandemic which has thus far ravaged the film industry will not have a huge impact on its release.

Mortal Kombat will release in theaters in 2021.
