With Mortal Kombat 11 still generating a lot of buzz through new DLC and the Scorpion's Revenge animated movie debuting in a few days, it's clear there's never been a better time to be a fan of NetherRealm's iconic fighting franchise. Not only has the game well and truly reclaimed its throne as the biggest name in the genre currently, but it's also beginning to spread out to a number of other mediums, seeing the series' world expanded in a number of new ways.
One of these is, of course, the upcoming film adaptation of Mortal Kombat, which will supposedly look to bring the over the top gore and crazy violence of the franchise to the big screen. Naturally, many won't be sold on the major adaptation until they see it with their own eyes, yet, the film's writer has let fans know that he intends to make the definitive on-screen version of the video game series through an incredibly bold claim on Twitter.
Greg Russo - the screenwriter behind the Mortal Kombat movie and the upcoming big-screen Resident Evil reboot - responded to a fan on Twitter yesterday claiming that they'd love to see an authentic Mortal Kombat cinematic adaptation. "They keep saying they're making a new Mortal Kombat movie, but it keeps not happening," the fan says, continuing "I want to see a MK movie that looks as badass as the cutscenes from the modern games." Clearly, the sentiment caught the attention of Russo, who responded "Already done. (and bloody too). Cutscenes? Forget cutscenes, my man. MK has never looked this good."
Evidently, Russo is incredibly confident about the film he and Simon McQuoid made, going as far as to claim that it looks better than the exceptionally beautiful and atmospheric cut-scenes that often debut with new Mortal Kombat releases. While the claims are bold, it's fantastic to see the film's writer so confident about his upcoming project, especially as video game movies are often made with little to no consideration of their source material. Here's hoping the movie is as exciting as the premise seems.
In the meantime, Mortal Kombat 11 is still a big part of the fighting game scene, with the title recently receiving Spawn as a new playable fighter as well as rumors indicating there are more roster members to come. Leaks seem to pit Ash from Ash vs Evil Dead as a shoo-in for the next Kombat Pack, while the likes of Sheeva, Fujin, Stryker, and even RoboCop are also being rumored to join the fight.
Mortal Kombat will release in theaters in 2021.
