We are now less than one year out from the release date of the Mortal Kombat movie. To celebrate the countdown Ludi Lin, the actor set to play Liu Kang, tweeted out a photo of the film's slate with what looks like a new twist on the classic MK logo.

The Mortal Kombat movie was announced to have entered pre-production in May of 2019. The movie is being produced by New Line Cinema and will be the directorial debut of Simon McQuoid. The reboot of the film series stars Joe Taslimi as Sub-Zero, Lin as Liu Kang, and Lewis Tan in an unknown role, as well as Josh Lawson, Jessica McNamee, Chin Han and Hiroyuki Sanada.  It was confirmed by the actors that the film had finished shooting back in December and is set to release on January 15, 2021.

Lin tweeted out the photo on the 15th, exactly one year to the day before the movie is set to come out. On the slate, it is easy to see the logo on the bottom alongside the title text and also as the translucent background of the slate. It is recognizable as the Mortal Kombat logo, but instead of the typical full circle surrounding the MK dragon, the tail makes a spiral. It is a more modern take on the logo that doesn't change things around too much, but makes it distinct enough from the games' logo that it is easy to differentiate the two in a world where both are ongoing franchises.

This movie will be the first Mortal Kombat movie since the 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. It's safe to say that Annihilation was so bad it ensured no one made an MK movie for the next 20 years. This upcoming reboot has been in the works in some form since 2011, switching directors and titles multiple times in the process.

It has not yet been officially confirmed for an R rating, but interviews and behind-the-scenes photos have indicated that its the MK movie is going to be pretty gory. An image shared by Lewis Tan shows that it will be bloody and violent, staying true to the core of Mortal Kombat. Screenwriter Greg Russo confirmed in a tweet that "MK WILL be R-Rated and for the first time EVER, FATALITIES will FINALLY be on the big screen."

Mortal Kombat arrives in theaters on January 15, 2021.
