Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion’s Revenge is getting the Warner Bros. animation treatment and features a very familiar cast of characters to anyone who has a history with the Mortal Kombat games. Based off of the original Mortal Kombat story, the evil shapeshifter Shang Tsung has organized a tournament for fighters from all corners of the world and beyond to come and compete in. The story follows Scorpion for the most part as he fights through the tournament, so this animated feature film should hold fans over until at least the live action Mortal Kombat reboot, slated for release in January 2021.

Due to the fact that this movie is based on the original story of Mortal Kombat, fans shouldn’t expect to see too many characters that made their debut in the more recent games in the series. The trailer, which dropped earlier this week, listed off the characters in the same order as the famous theme song from the 1995 live action movie, so fans can take it as evidence of which characters will appear in the animated feature set to come out this spring on home video. Either way, here are all of the characters in Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion’s Revenge.

Scorpion

The titular character is also the most recognizable character in the Mortal Kombat franchise. Scorpion is the focus of Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion’s Revenge and is voiced by Patrick Seitz. In the lore of the franchise, Scorpion is a resurrected spectre ninja brought back from death in order to avenge his clan, the Shirai Ryu. Before his transformation into the spectre Scorpion, his previous name was Hanzo Hasashi. Seitz is credited as voicing both Scorpion and Hanzo Hasashi, so fans can expect Scorpion’s origins to be brought up frequently throughout the movie.

Liu Kang

Though Scorpion is frequently on the covers of the games and is the recognizable mascot of Mortal Kombat, Liu Kang is the protagonist of the original story as he attempts to win the tournament and triumph over the evil sorcerer and his arch enemy Shang Tsung. In Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion’s Revenge, his trademark determination and resilience shine through during the trailer. He is voiced by Jordan Rodrigues in the animated movie.

Johnny Cage

johnny cage mortal kombat

The egotistical action movie star from the Mortal Kombat universe, Johnny Cage, is another character to appear in the very first game and is a fan favorite. He initially joins the tournament hosted by Shang Tsung to prove to critics of his movies that he is a natural and skilled martial artist. Voiced by Joel McHale, Johnny Cage seems just as cocky as ever in Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion’s Revenge.

Sonya Blade

sonya mortal kombat

Another character that appeared in the original Mortal Kombat game, Sonya Blade is featured in the new animated feature film as well. Notably, Sonya is the first female character to be introduced in the franchise. A special forces agent of Earthrealm, Sonya’s objectives throughout the lore are to secure the safety of the realm. In Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion’s Revenge, she is voiced by Jennifer Carpenter.

Sub-Zero

sub-zero mortal kombat subzero

Another iconic character from the original Mortal Kombat, Sub-Zero, and his classic blue costume, is the second most recognizable character in the video game and movie franchise and is the second mascot of the series, behind Scorpion with whom he has shared a long and intense rivalry. Sub-Zero is actually the codename that a family of Lin Kuei ninjas adopted (one of them was killed by Scorpion in the first tournament). In this movie, he is voiced by Steve Blum.

Shang Tsung

shang tsung mortal kombat

The evil shapeshifter and sorcerer is another character that appeared in the first Mortal Kombat game. Shang Tsung organizes the initial tournament and sabotages many of the contestants with his usual tricks. He also is one of the bosses of the game and the story, along with Goro (and Kintaro). He is voiced by Artt Butler in the upcoming animated feature.

Quan Chi

quan chi mortal kombat

Quan Chi is a powerful sorcerer from the Netherrealm and is a frequent enemy of Scorpion (and Sub-Zero, and even a bunch of other characters). He has an especially significant history with Scorpion and such should play an interesting role in the upcoming animated movie. His interactions with Scorpion involve destroying Scorpion’s entire family and frequently reminding him of that massacre. He is voiced by Darin De Paul in Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion’s Revenge.

Kano

Kano is another original Mortal Kombat character and is a mercenary known for his dagger and cybernetic eye. As leader of the Black Dragon clan, his crimes and brutality got the attention of Sonya Blade, who becomes his sworn enemy. His notoriety also earns him some respect from Shao Kahn. In Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion’s Revenge, he is voiced by Robin Atkin Downes.

Raiden

raiden mortal kombat

Raiden is, like Scorpion (and a few other characters), one of the first characters to be introduced in Mortal Kombat and has appeared in every mainline game as a playable character. Being the thunder god of Earthrealm, Raiden holds an especially significant role in the Mortal Kombat universe, and as such, has usually been the one to affect the story of a particular game the most. In the animated movie, he is voiced by David B. Mitchell.

Jax

Jax is another member of the special forces unit, the Outer World Investigation Agency (which Sonya Blade is also a part of). He is recognizable for his cybernetic arms which contributed to his most recognizable move - picking up his enemies slamming them from side to side. In Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion’s Revenge, he is voiced by Ike Amadi.

Goro

goro mortal kombat

Goro is probably the most recognizable villain in all of the Mortal Kombat franchise. The four-armed warrior was the undefeated champion of the tournament and served as a sub-boss to Shang Tsung in the original game. During the trailer for Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion’s Revenge, it seems Goro will be acting as Shang Tsung’s ally and fellow saboteur once again much like he did in the original games. He is voiced in the movie by Kevin Michael Richardson.

Kitana

kitana mortal kombat

Kitana is a warrior princess (and former step-daughter of the evil Shao Kahn) who comes from the realm of Edenia. She was first introduced in Mortal Kombat 2. Kitana is known for her steel fan blades which she tosses around to great effect. Notably, in the lore of the franchise, she is over 10,000 years old. In the upcoming animated feature, she is voiced by Grey Griffin.

Reptile

reptile mortal kombat

Reptile appeared in the first Mortal Kombat as a secret boss and his appearance then was as a ninja, just like Scorpion or Sub-Zero, but with the color palette swapped to green. Over the course of the games throughout the franchise, Reptile was developed into a humanoid lizard creature that more resembled his name. In the original story and the upcoming animated film, he aids Shang Tsung mainly in disrupting Sonya’s objectives.

Satoshi Hasashi

Satoshi Hasashi is the son of Hanzo Hasashi, better known as Scorpion. Satoshi is killed during Shirai Ryu massacre which wiped out Scorpion’s clan and family. This fuels his revenge when is resurrected as the ninja spectre Scorpion. This character was confirmed to be in the upcoming animated film in some capacity, as Grey Griffin, who is also voicing Kitana, has been credited with portraying Satoshi in the movie.

Demon Torturer

The Demon Torturer is a character that will be appearing in Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion’s Revenge. Though the character has not appeared in the trailer, voice actor Fred Tatasciore is already credited with voicing him in the upcoming movie meaning the character will make an appearance.

Though there is a long history of Mortal Kombat games and lore, this upcoming movie will be focusing on the original story with Scorpion as one of the main characters. If the trailer is any indication, then it’s going to be true to its source material.

Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion’s Revenge will be available on home video this spring.
