Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon says he would love to do a crossover with Killer Instinct, but concedes the title would have to be an Xbox One exclusive.

Responding to a fan recommendation for a potential Mortal Kombat crossover, series co-creator Ed Boon acknowledged that he loves the Killer Instinct franchise, but any possible crossover between the two properties would end up being an Xbox One exclusive as a result. Given that the Killer Instinct reboot has been a Microsoft project from the ground up, this shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. But the fact that Ed Boon specifically mentioned the franchise is interesting news for fans waiting to hear about the next Mortal Kombat.

Of course, the off-hand tweet isn't any sort of confirmation that Boon and NetherRealm Studios are working on a crossover, but it does indicate that Boon is not only thinking about potential crossovers, but also has thought about what it would mean for the series in terms of exclusivity.

On a smaller scale, it's not a far-fetched idea to think that a Mortal Kombat character might feature in the pre-existing Killer Instinct franchise, since the rebooted Killer Instinct seems to be Microsoft's own version of Super Smash Bros in terms of tying in characters from different intellectual properties. While the guest characters so far have come from other Microsoft properties like General Raam from Gears of War and Arbiter from Halo, it wouldn't be a stretch for the studio to extend beyond this, much like Nintendo did when they brought in third party characters like Sonic the Hedgehog or Solid Snake.

The Mortal Kombat series was briefly involved with a potential television-based crossover project with Street Fighter back in 1997, but those plans fell through. While a crossover with Street Fighter would certainly help bolster lackluster sales for Capcom's fighting franchise, Boon only mentioned Killer Instinct when speculating about crossovers for his series. It's worth noting that this speculative title would likely also launch for PC, under Microsoft's Xbox Play Anywhere initiative.

In any event, Ed Boon will be busy for the time being finishing production on Injustice 2, the sequel to the popular Gods Among Us fighting game based in the DC Comics realm. The game was revealed shortly ahead of E3 2016, and introduces new elements to gameplay like stat-boosting loot drops. With Injustice 2 scheduled to drop next year, it looks like any potential Mortal Kombat crossover is the subject for a distant release.

What do you think about the possibility of a Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct crossover exclusively for the Xbox One, Ranters?
