Mortal Kombat DLC

A recent tweet from Ed Boon, the executive producer of the Mortal Kombat series, revealed some potential DLC characters for the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot. In the tweet he asked, "Seriously guys. Tell me your order of preference for a DLC character. Rain, Shinnok, Kenshi, Robo-smoke, or new character?" He later added, "Ooops...forgot one. Or Tanya."

Perhaps he is just playing a cruel joke on gamers, or maybe he is really looking for feedback regarding potential DLC characters. Even if none of the listed characters make it into the game as DLC, it does provide some evidence that NetherRealm Studios is considering DLC characters.

Downloadable characters can add to a game and give the hardcore fans something to look forward to, or get players re-interested in a game after it has been out for a bit, but they can also split the user base. Are the DLC characters going to be well balanced? Will people with the DLC characters be able to play against people without the DLC characters online? Who knows. At this point, it remains speculation whether any DLC characters will actually be made available. At least PS3 gamers know they are getting Kratos.

The released trailers and character vignettes sure make it seem like this Mortal Kombat is getting a lot right about what has made the franchise so much fun in the past. Our hands on with the game only further reinforced those feelings. Whether or not a particular character makes the game as DLC or otherwise, fighting fans would be wise to keep on an eye on this one.

Which character would you like to see as DLC? If you could pick any one character from the Mortal Kombat universe to add to the new Mortal Kombat, which character would it be? Any character you hope is not added? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Mortal Kombat lands on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in April 2011.
