'Mortal Kombat' DLC Characters Scarlet and Kenshi Confirmed

Moral Kombat DLC Characters Leaked Magazine

Though gamers might be more than satisfied with the robust offering of fighters for the upcoming reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise, there are still some classic characters that were left out. Luckily, NetherRealm Studios, in an effort to mitigate rumors, has come out to confirm DLC characters are on the way.

The first characters to be added to the Mortal Kombat roster are Scarlet and Kenshi, two combatants with unique backstories in the Mortal Kombat universe. Unfortunately, as this reveal was merely NetherRealm clearing up incorrect information, the developer only shed light on certain aspects of the DLC characters, and did not confirm a release date.

The first and most obvious question that will be on MK fans’ minds when they hear this news is if these characters are merely on-disc fighters that were held back for a DLC release. While such a strategy has been employed recently with Marvel vs. Capcom 3, NetherRealm’s Ed Boon has confirmed via Twitter that the DLC characters are not on the disc.

Building upon the idea that these characters were developed solely as DLC additions, NetherRealm also confirmed that Kenshi and Scarlet are their own unique fighters. Both characters will have their own fighting style, brutal fatalities, and all of the extra pieces of flair that have been added to this iteration.

It’s sort of ironic that Scarlet, a character born from a glitch that turned the outfits of certain female ninja characters red, is actually getting the full development treatment. Her inclusion shows that NetherRealm is willing to pull from all aspects of the Mortal Kombat universe to appeal to all fans.

More importantly, the reveal of Kenshi, a character who was earlier teased by Boon as potential DLC, gives hope to fans of Shinnok or Rain that they too will be added later on.

Although NetherRealm did come out to clear up certain elements in regards to the DLC characters, they would not say if the Scarlet and Kenshi are only pieces to a larger DLC package or if they are the first DLC release. Additionally, the magazine posting from which this whole rumor started has Kintaro, a boss in the retail version of the game, listed as a downloadable character, which is incorrect.

NetherRealm has already shown that there will be plenty of content packed into each retail version (with a little extra for PS3 gamers) of Mortal Kombat, but they have also hinted that all their cards have yet to be shown. This DLC confirmation (of sorts) does indicate that there are more treats for MK fans on the way — adding even more fantastic content to an already enticing fighting game.

What do you think of Lady in Red and Kenshi as the first DLC characters for Mortal Kombat? Now that the possibility of DLC is being thrown around, which characters would you like to see be added to the roster?

Mortal Kombat releases April 19, 2011 for Xbox 360 and PS3.
