NetherRealm Studios could be adding another feather to its cap as far as crossover fighting games are concerned. The developer, best known for its hyper-violent Mortal Kombat series, has branched out in recent years to deliver several games in the genre featuring iconic superheroes and villains from the comic book world.

In 2009, Warner Bros. Interactive formed NetherRealm Studios out of the Midway Games bankruptcy, providing it the necessary funding to successfully reboot Mortal Kombat with 2011's installment. 2013's Injustice: Gods Among Us would capitalize on that initial momentum, ultimately giving rise to a sister franchise that NetherRealm would typically work on between Mortal Kombat releases.

Instead of getting straight to work on a third Injustice title following the release of Mortal Kombat 11, however, it would seem as though NetherRealm could be pooling its resources for a completely different superpowered affair. On Twitter, NetherRealm head Ed Boon has indirectly acknowledged previous rumors originating from prolific industry insider Daniel Richtman that the studio is developing a Marvel fighting game.

Alongside Joss Whedon, James Gunn is one of few individuals to have worked on the MCU and DCEU, with this year's The Suicide Squad, as well as the entire Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy among his directorial credits. Boon makes direct reference to this in his Tweet by remarking that the feat is impressive, which is then followed by a thinking-face emoji, implying that he too, could soon be joining that very same shortlist.

Conversely, it's with an equal degree of probability that the Mortal Kombat co-creator is simply having some good-natured fun at his followers' expense. The video game industry veteran has an established reputation for commenting on rumors and speculation, though such episodes don't always result in an official confirmation or announcement. That being the case, it's worth keeping expectations in check on this particular occasion, especially as a collaboration between NetherRealm and Marvel would mean the involvement of the latter's direct competitor.

Assuming this is a temporary partnership that both parties have actually pursued behind closed doors, NetherRealm could end up being the first video game developer ever, to bring together the likes of Superman, Batman, Thor, Iron Man and a league of other exceptional protectors of Earth for an all-star brawler. All conjecture at this point, of course, but should the whispers hold any truth, fans can likely expect to learn more as the onslaught of summer reveal season kicks off next month with E3 and associated events.
