It's a big month for NetherRealm Studios as they're now just weeks away from launching the latest entry in the long-running Mortal Kombat franchise. Mortal Kombat 11 continues the studio's trend of pushing the technological envelope, while also attempting to bring new mechanics into the franchise such as Fatal and Krushing Blows. In a recent 166 rapid-fire question interview, Ed Boon revealed even more behind the scenes details regarding the game as well as some interesting non-Mortal Kombat tidbits, including a potential NeatherRealm/Marvel game.

The surprising admission came towards the end of the interview with Game Informer's Ben Hanson, who asked Boon whether he's ever had a conversation with Marvel about making a fighting game. After hearing the question, Boon's eyes light up as he admitted that he had, though he didn't reveal when or if the two companies were still in contact regarding a new game. It's also possible that Boon may have tipped his hand a bit during his answer as he made a face as though he may be treading into a legal minefield and admitted that he probably shouldn't talk about it.

Before moving on, Boon mentioned that he'd love to create a Marvel fighting game or even something along the lines of Marvel vs DC. While Midway Games first crossover attempt with Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe wasn't a mega-hit with critics, the studio has continued to improve and crank out massively successful fighting games since transitioning into NetherRealm Studios. Whether reviving the Mortal Kombat franchise or working on two successful DC superhero fighting games, NetherRealm would certainly have fan backing for a new fighting game with the Marvel license.

Outside of Marvel, the interview also held a few other interesting nuggets of information, both about Mortal Kombat 11 and on other topics. While Boon believes that Shao Kahn is primed to be a character that wins an Evo Tournament, he also revealed that the character Neo from the Matrix movies was very close to being a guest DLC fighter to the roster of Injustice 2. Even with Warner Bros having been involved with the Matrix movies and also acting as publisher for NetherRealm, the deal ultimately fell through and gave way to other characters like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Mortal Kombat 11 is scheduled to launch on April 23, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
