Mortal Kombat Teasing Announcement Header

The Mortal Kombat games have always been chock full of secrets, and series creator Ed Boon has always loved to take an active role in playing with the fans. From the secret characters of Noob Saibot and Reptile to the myth, and eventual inclusion of Ermac, Boon has always had a knack for having fun with mystery. The fact that there’s a purple ninja called Rain (get it?) in the series is proof enough.

So it’s only natural that Mortal Kombat fans have been going into a frenzy over the tweets Ed Boon has been posting this month. It all started with a math question — Boon tweeting “square root of 841” — before following it up by asking how many days there were in February. The answers to those two tweets? 29 and 28. The day after that? 27. It looked as though Boon was giving us all a countdown.

But a countdown to what? After a few more sporadic cryptic messages, Ed Boon has popped up again with this tweet.

There’s an obvious answer to what Boon is hinting at. 2011’s incredibly successful Mortal Kombat reboot was the ninth in the series, and with X meaning ten in Roman numerals, it may well be that we’re going to get a tenth Mortal Kombat title announcment sooner rather than later. Previously we’d been told that another Mortal Kombat game would coincide with the upcoming 2015 movie, and with Kiefer Sutherland casually dropping his involvement in the series in an interview in February, maybe we’ll get something more concrete on that project soon.

Of course, that’s not the only theory that fans are coming up with. The X could also signify a crossover title using the Mortal Kombat universe as one of its parts. Last year’s Injustice: Gods Among Us was well-received and the Mortal Kombat franchise is no stranger to a team-up, given 2008’s Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Who knows, maybe NetherRealm Studios would like to take another crack at it.

Ed Boon’s not giving anything away though. Followers dropping questions and theories his way are being met with more game-playing and mystery. He’s asked “wouldn’t people rather have a next-gen game” when queried about a PS4 and Xbox One re-release of the last Mortal Kombat, and toyed with fans asking about crossover titles. Boon even said he is just “talking cars.” When called “Super-troll” by a follower, Ed Boon took the time to correct him. “No, that’s MAN OF TROLL to you.”

Boon’s countdown ends on June 2nd, so there’s not long left to go. Incidentally, that’s only a few days before the start of E3. Although Boon’s said that there won’t be a Mortal Kombat game at E3 this year, you never know what he’ll have in store.

Are you excited for Ed Boon's announcement? Is there anything you want from the next Mortal Kombat title? Or would you rather see another Injustice?
