On the day before the Mortal Kombat 11 release date, NetherRealm Studios indicated that it was already working on changes to the title's single-player Towers of Time game mode. This statement came in response to a number of Mortal Kombat 11 reviews and outcry from players that had received advanced copies of the game, which took issue with the extreme difficulty spikes found in the Towers. Now, NetherRealm has given further details on its plans.

As indicated in Wednesday's Kombat Kast stream, NetherRealm is approaching its balancing of the Mortal Kombat 11 Towers of Time in two phases. The first phase occurred on the night of April 23, when a server-side update was launched with a couple of changes for the Towers.

One of these changes was to reduce the maximum health of certain Mortal Kombat 11 Towers of Time AI. Prior to this, some powerful AI could have up to 4,000 health, opposed to the standard 1,000 health, which made some players feel as though they were dealing significantly nerfed damage in combat. This situation should be considerably improved by the server-side update, as the highest health for an AI is now 1,500.

The other change in this first Mortal Kombat 11 Towers of Time fix was to to reduce the frequency of unblockable attacks. Indeed, some players found getting stunned by an unblockable barrage of rockets made the Mortal Kombat 11 Towers of Time too hard, especially when combined with their seemingly nerfed damage output, and now they will encounter these attacks less often.

This is not the end of the story with unblockable attacks though, as they are at the center of the second phase of the Mortal Kombat 11 Towers of Time fix. Specifically, an upcoming patch will make unblockable attacks blockable, something that could not be done through Tuesday's server-side update.

The patch that will introduce this change does not currently have a definitive release date, but NetherRealm has indicated that it will arrive early next week at the latest. Fans may be happy to learn that this forthcoming patch will also increase currency rewards from the Towers.

The tone of Wednesday's Kombat Kast was one of seriousness, with NetherRealm heavily emphasizing that its primary intention is to support a game that is "fun," and that Mortal Kombat 11 was "never designed to encourage in-game purchases." Certainly, the Mortal Kombat 11 microtransactions are the site of a host of issues, and it is clear that the developers want to dispel the idea that the title attempts to push players to them through overly difficult gameplay.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
