One of the biggest surprises at The Game Awards 2018 was when NetherRealm Studios head Ed Boon took the stage to announce the Best Sports/Racing Game nominees, but instead revealed Mortal Kombat 11. Fans responded positively to the cinematic trailer, which featured series mainstays Raiden and Scorpion fighting to the death, but there has been some mixed reception to the song used to go with the action.

Many fans online, across YouTube comments, forum posts, and more, have expressed their dislike of the song in Mortal Kombat 11's trailer, with many saying that the music didn't match the action on-screen. Others disagree and have defended the song, but regardless, it definitely seems to be polarizing the Mortal Kombat community.

The song in question is an original piece called "Immortal," and it's performed by rapper 21 Savage. At the time of writing, Immortal doesn't appear to have been released to the public outside of the Mortal Kombat 11 trailer from The Game Awards, but that will likely change in the near future.

Check out Immortal by 21 Savage in the trailer below and judge for yourself:

While some fans may be disappointed at the song choice in the Mortal Kombat 11 announce trailer, it's unlikely that the music will have any major appearance in the game itself, if at all. And if it is in the game, it will likely be one of many song options, and players may even be able to turn it off if they so desire.

It's possible that the song will be used for some cinematics in the story mode, though we don't have many details about what that will entail just yet. The very end of the new Mortal Kombat 11 trailer gives us a brief glimpse at a new character standing next to an hourglass, and fans have surmised that this new character is tied to the game's narrative. Of course, that's just speculation at this time, and we will have to wait for NetherRealm to share more details to be sure.

Luckily, more details on Mortal Kombat 11 should come sooner rather than later. The game is set to be featured at a Community Reveal Event on January 17, so fans should find out a lot more about what Mortal Kombat 11 has to offer next month, from new characters to pre-order bonuses and more.

Mortal Kombat 11 launches April 23 for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
