With the words “dead meme,” Mortal Kombat 11 Community Manager Tyler Lansdown put the nail in the coffin. The NetherRealm Studios dev confirmed that Shaggy will not be a part of the Mortal Kombat 11 roster, despite strong grass roots support from fans.

During this week’s Kombat Kast, NetherRealm gave Mortal Kombat 11 fans a look at Kabal, the latest returning fighter to join the game’s growing roster. The livestream showed off all of Kabal’s move sets, combos, finishers, and a few of its fatalities. NetherRealm has been doing these types of in-depth character demonstrations for a while now and for those that love theory crafting ahead of release, they offer a lot of information.

But usually it’s the end of the Kombat Kasts that delivers the most newsworthy details for fans anticipating the latest Mortal Kombat, and this week’s was no exception. The devs ran through a number of questions from fans, but the one that stood out the most was regarding Shaggy’s inclusion in the game.

For those that may not have been following along, Shaggy has become the latest meme on the Internet, with jokes focused on the character’s seemingly latent power. As a result, a bunch of fans got together to create a petition to add Shaggy to Mortal Kombat 11 and amassed over 340,000 signatures.

Things got interesting when Mortal Kombat 11 director Ed Boon shared in the fun by entertaining the thought of Shaggy in the game, as well as sharing some impressive character mockups. But Ed Boon is a notorious troll who enjoys teases his fan base on a regular basis, so few took his interest in the meme as an acknowledgment that NetherRealm was really considering Shaggy.

Now, that hope of Shaggy making a surprise appearance as DLC is officially dead. Obviously, that won’t put to rest all of the other Shaggy memes out there but it should put an end to his connections to Mortal Kombat 11. While it seemed like a far-fetched idea – putting a Scooby Doo character – in a violent fighting game, stranger things have happened. They just won’t be happening with this character.

Mortal Kombat 11 releases April 23, 2019 for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
