Spawn, the next DLC fighter for NetherRealm Studios' Mortal Kombat 11, was given an official trailer during today's Final Kombat tournament in Illinois. To coincide with his gameplay reveal, the PlayStation Blog released a look at four of Spawn's alternate costumes ranging from the developers' unique take on Todd McFarlane's comic book superhero to more traditional outfits from his origins.

The blog post was written by NetherRealm Studios Cinematic Director Dominic Cianciolo, who says the Mortal Kombat 11 team has many fans Spawn who were "obsessed with giving this devil his due," as both Mortal Kombat and Spawn were introduced to the world in 1992. Cianciolo describes his custom look created by NetherRealm as a "uniquely sinister" take, one with a medieval armor bent and a more monochrome grey mask.

Previous speculation based on a leaked toy suggested Spawn might use a sword. However Cianciolo says that particularly for the "iconic Spawn outfit," the team hoped to portray the character properly by putting a lot of attention on his "trademark weapons:" The cape and chains. Both will be part of his core gameplay and his Fatality, "Rest in Pieces."

The "iconic outfit" design has been replicated in a special Hellspawn skin being added for Jacqui Briggs. She will be released alongside the "Matinee Skin Pack," which will feature an "Osh Tekk Vandal" variant of Total Kahn, a "Swashbuckler" variant of Erron Black, and a "Space Marine" variant of Jacqui Briggs clearly inspired by Sigourney Weaver's Ripley from the Alien franchise.

Fans of the Image Comics character will also be able to use a skin that is more faithful to Spawn's origins in the comics, one with cleaner colors and a plastic toy-like sheen. As another reference, Spawn will be voiced by Keith David, who was the character in an HBO animated series from the 90s.

Cianciolo says that during the six month development cycle for Spawn, NetherRealm Studios also hoped to showcase the character's other abilities such as "conjuring demons and blasting opponents with Necroplasm," much like they did for previous DLC fighters like DC Comics' Joker. The final costume shown by the PlayStation Blog features a "Commando" Spawn covered in guns, grenades, and ammo belts.

NetherRealm Studios cancelled the live audience for Final Kombat due to Coronavirus concerns, but the livestreamed reveal of Spawn has still made waves online. Players can look forward to trying Todd McFarlane's character in all of his alternate costumes starting through early access on March 17.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
