With Mortal Kombat 11, the latest entry in NetherRealm Studios' grisly and gruesome fighting game series, only a couple of months away from release, it's not surprising that we're seeing a new character announcement practically every other week or so. Last time it was fan-favorite Jade, who was noticeably absent in the previous game and now back as an undead Revenant, and today it's been confirmed that another classic character will be returning, though this one isn't all that surprising. Johnny Cage will be joining the Mortal Kombat 11 roster.

One of the very first game's original fighters and someone director Ed Boon quite clearly teased a few days ago, Johnny Cage has made playable appearances in almost every title to date. Though he was originally an action-movie star, the 2011 game that acted as a reboot for the series saw him become one of the main defenders of Earthrealm. In the sequel, he subsequently left his celebrity status and became a Special Forces agent and led his own squad, which included his daughter Cassie (who has also been rumored to make an appearance in Mortal Kombat 11).

The new trailer shows Johnny return to being an actor, which may seem a bit odd at first but Mortal Kombat 11's story will involve time travel, so this could be a past version of him. Regardless, Johnny still retains a lot of his old moves that fans are familiar with, like his kicks, glowing, green projectiles and ball-punching, but he's got plenty of brand new ones that reference his actor status.

He can call in a stunt double to hold his opponent in place, he can use a camera to temporarily blind and stun people and he can perform the classic "trapped in a box" mime, which acts as a counter move (most likely a reference to one of his movies - 'Ninja Mime'). His super move even involves stabbing the opponent with a wannabe Oscar trophy. And finally, his Finisher sees him taking multiple takes trying to punch his opponent's head off, complete with a director yelling to cut. If the YouTube comments are anything to go by, this one has gone down well with fans.

Mortal Kombat 11 will release on April 23rd for PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch.
