With less than a week left before Mortal Kombat 11 finally launches, the street date has already been broken in some places resulting in potential spoilers surfacing online. Although the base roster is now known, there are other aspects of the game that remain a mystery like The Krypt and Towers of Time. While many expected these modes to become available following the Day 1 patch, it now appears there's another reason as to why these modes are not appearing.

After downloading a Day 1 patch, fans with early copies of Mortal Kombat 11 discovered that the Towers of Time and The Krypt are still unavailable from the game's menu. Worse yet, gear pieces which let players customize their characters were not available either.

According to a Tweet from NetherRealm developer Daanish Syed, before it was quickly deleted, Mortal Kombat 11 requires a constant online connection in order to access these modes and the gear they offer as well as achievements. It's certainly a shift in philosophy from NetherRealm's previous titles like Injustice 2 which provided most of its content as offline accessible.

This always online requirement looks to extend to at least one of the unlockable characters on the base roster. While the character has two ways to be unlocked, either through direct purchase online or by completing chapter 4 of the campaign, some players have discovered that even finishing that portion of the offline campaign isn't working to unlock the character. The notification appears, but the character remains not selectable on the roster. It's unknown if this is directly related to the game not being connected to the online servers yet or something else prior to the official launch.

With gear being such an integral part of the core experience, it's unlikely that this previously undocumented requirement is going to sit well with fans. The Krypt is largely an offline mode where the player can spend currency they've earned to unlock all sorts of cosmetics, though it appears in Mortal Kombat 11, the unlocks need to authenticate with online servers for some reason. The Towers of Time is a little surprising as the Multiverse mode of Injustice 2 allowed fans to play offline. However, classic single-player towers are likely still available offline just like the campaign.

It's also worth considering what sort of experience this is going to be for Switch players constantly taking this game on the go. Unless constantly connected to WiFi, players may not have access to most of the game as expected. Still, there seems to be a lot of unconfirmed parts to this, so fans will need to wait until NetherRealm officially responds to be sure.

Mortal Kombat 11 will launch on April 23 for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
