Mortal Kombat 11 players are not happy about Hogwarts Legacy ads appearing in their fighting game of choice. It's not new for publishers to sometimes add advertisements to their games to promote new products, but it often stirs up controversy when it happens in premium games like Mortal Kombat 11.

While it's been heavily discounted and offered as part of subscription services since its initial release, Mortal Kombat 11 first launched in 2019 as a full-priced video game. Its status as a full-priced game made Mortal Kombat 11's microtransactions controversial at the time, as some felt as though the game was balanced in a way to encourage real-money purchases. Now fans are upset about Mortal Kombat 11 being used to advertise Hogwarts Legacy.

Hogwarts Legacy is the open world Harry Potter action-RPG that first released in February to mostly positive reviews and record-breaking sales. The game initially launched for just PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, but Xbox One and PS4 versions of Hogwarts Legacy dropped recently, hence why there's a renewed marketing push for the game. Both Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat are published by Warner Bros., which explains why the ads are in MK11, but fans are upset about it nevertheless. They feel as though since they paid for Mortal Kombat 11, they shouldn't be subjected to advertisements for other products.

The controversy is made all the worse by the issues surrounding Hogwarts Legacy. Hogwarts Legacy is a particularly controversial game thanks to the frequent transphobic comments made by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. Some gamers have decided to boycott Hogwarts Legacy as a way to rebel against Rowling, but now they may have to deal with advertisements for the Harry Potter action-RPG being shoved in their face while playing a completely unrelated fighting game.

It remains to be seen how Mortal Kombat publisher Warner Bros. will respond to the backlash. It's possible that the company will decide to pull Hogwarts Legacy ads from Mortal Kombat 11, but that seems unlikely. The more likely scenario is that the Hogwarts Legacy ads will remain in Mortal Kombat 11 until the latest marketing push for the game wears off, whenever that may be. It's also possible that when the Hogwarts Legacy ads are pulled from Mortal Kombat 11 that ads for a different game will show up in their place.

Rumor has it that a full-fledged Mortal Kombat 12 reveal could be happening at some point later this month. These rumors come hot off the heels of series creator Ed Boon teasing Mortal Kombat 12 characters, so fans are hopeful that the reveal will indeed be happening. If so, perhaps the Hogwarts Legacy ads will get replaced by advertisements to pre-order Mortal Kombat 12. Some fans may still be unhappy about ads being in their premium game at all, but it's safe to say that advertising Mortal Kombat 12 in Mortal Kombat 11 would be far less controversial on the part of WB.

Mortal Kombat 11 is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
