Update 5/31: NetherRealm Studios confirmed the early access release date for Shang Tsung. Original story follows.

With the Mortal Kombat 11 release date having come and gone, many players are now getting to experience NetherRealm Studios' new fighting game firsthand. Indeed, these players are certain to be discovering the sizable roster of Mortal Kombat 11 characters and the myriad of cosmetic items that can be obtained in the game's Krypt. While this content is likely to be sufficient in keeping many fans occupied for a good amount of time, some may already have their eyes set on what the future of the title will bring.

Specifically, certain players are undoubtedly asking the question of when will DLC for Mortal Kombat 11 come out. While the answer to this question has not been officially announced at the time of writing, looking at the history of NetherRealm Studios' post-launch title support may give some indication of when fans can start expecting Mortal Kombat 11 DLC characters.

To begin, the first DLC character to be released for Mortal Kombat X was Friday the 13th's Jason Voorhees. This Mortal Kombat guest character released on May 5, 2015, exactly four weeks after the Mortal Kombat X release date.

Injustice 2 followed a similar DLC release schedule. Namely, the game's first DLC character, Red Hood, was released on June 13, 2017, just a handful of days more than four weeks post-launch. With Injustice, the first DLC fighter, Lobo, came even more quickly, arriving only three weeks after the game's release.

As such, fans that are excited for the first Mortal Kombat 11 DLC release date may not have much longer to wait. If the aforementioned schedule holds true, the answer to the question of when will Shang Tsung be available in MK11 might indeed be late May.

Following the Shang Tsung release date, the MK11 DLC release schedule is likely to bring new fighters to the game on a fairly consistent basis. The first six of these MK11 guest characters will be made available as part of Kombat Pack 1, and a Mortal Kombat 11 DLC leak has potentially confirmed some of the MK11 DLC fighters that will be included.

That said, a separate MK11 DLC datamine has indicated that there could be as many as 19 additional fighters coming to the game. If this proves to be accurate, NetherRealm's claim that there is "years of content" planned for Mortal Kombat 11 makes a great deal of sense.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
