There are a lot of reasons to be excited for the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11 - the increasingly impressive roster of fighters, the cinematic story mode, the sheer amount of gruesome gore, just to name a few. But for some, it will be the many ways they can customize their favorite characters in terms of appearance and fighting style. While all the new gear will be purely cosmetic, the game will feature options to slightly alter the various fighters' move-sets and even their match ending Fatalities. With this many options, it's unsurprising (though probably still disappointing for some) that customization will be rather restricted when it comes to online competitive play.

This doesn't mean that the online modes won't feature any customization at all. Instead, players will be offered a different number of preset character builds, rather than be able to personally tweak nearly every aspect to their liking. Developer NetherRealm hasn't stated how many there will be in total but every character will have at least two, though some may have more than others. "They are thought out and planned to create the best variety of gameplay within the system that we have,” said Lead Designer John Edwards.

Furthermore, NetherRealm said that these different builds could be swapped out and amended so as to give players more variety. Also, the aforementioned cosmetic items can be brought into online ranked matches and local tournament modes, so if players have a specific look for their Sub-Zero or Scorpion, they can still show it off to the world. NetherRealm also clarified that this move will only apply to the competitive-oriented modes, since it will make competitive play less unpredictable and put everyone on an even playing field, which will certainly be appealing to those who wish to demonstrate their unbridled skill at Mortal Kombat 11.

Despite there being less than a month until the game's release, it still seems there's quite a bit left to see from it. The most recent set of leaks suggest that there're still plenty of characters that have yet to be revealed and that Animalities will be making a return as well.
