Mortal Kombat 11 was one of the most exciting reveals of the Game Awards. Since then, fans have been anxiously awaiting any new details of the gory fighting game. Luckily, NetherRealm has finally decided to bestow gamers with some more info on the game during its Kommunity Reveal live stream, including the new gear system that will allow players to customize their favorite characters.

In Mortal Kombat 11, players will be able to select one of three variations of each character, much like in Mortal Kombat 10. This time, though, players will be able to customize the variations however they so choose, from cosmetics and abilities all the way to AI behavior. Each character will have three different costume slots, all of which players can change to put an original spin on their chosen fighters. The video only shows off Scorpion and Baraka, but there seems to be an incredible variety of options for players to mess around with.

Custom character variations are bound to do wonders for the replay value of the game, especially considering all the unique variations players are pretty much guaranteed to bump into online. By giving players full control over their characters and allowing so many variations, the developer has almost given fans an endless roster of characters that can duke it out against each other, as seen in the new gameplay trailer. The only downside is that it may wind up taking a fair bit longer to find a dedicated main.

As a whole, Mortal Kombat 11 appears to be the culmination of everything the franchise has done in the past, except for Kart Racing. The game boasts the same fluid combat and over-the-top gore that fans know and love, and the fatalities seem to be especially brutal this time around. It appears NetherRealm is building upon its cherished formula by introducing features like customization rather trying to shake up the system that fans know and love. Even the collector's edition, which features a 1:1 replica of Scorpion's mask, seems to be an excellent piece of fan service. Hopefully, the studio will show off some more fun stuff as the game inches closer to release.

Mortal Kombat 11 is scheduled to release on April 23, 2019, for PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
