Mortal Kombat 11 is one of the biggest fighting games to come out in years, with tons of fans playing the game across multiple platforms. Now it seems publisher WB Interactive Entertainment is spoiling these fans, as not only are they getting new holiday rewards on top of crossplay.
WB has announced that Mortal Kombat 11 crossplay (or "Krossplay," as it's calling it) will be coming to PS4 and Xbox One consoles. However, they have yet to announce when this will actually take into effect, and have clarified that cross-saves won't be happening.
While the PlayStation Network confirmed earlier today that crossplay would be coming to Mortal Kombat 11, they hadn't announced which platforms the update would be coming to. The original assumption was that crossplay would be coming to all platforms. Unfortunately for Nintendo Switch and PC players, developer NetherRealm Studios has made it clear that this is not the case in a pre-Game Awards FAQ.
NetherRealm explained that the feature is currently being tested on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One only, so it's safe to assume that Krossplay will be coming to the Switch and PC eventually. Using Krossplay will allow PS4 and Xbox One players to enter the same matchmaking pool for Online Kasual game modes. Unfortunately, since there's no cross-save, progress will be locked to whichever platform players started out on.
Despite NetherRealm explaining it in an FAQ, there's no mention of crossplay in the patch notes listed on the Mortal Kombat Games Support page. Just general gameplay adjustments and a reduction of the Kombat League Point Cap players can lose. This could be because NetherRealm originally meant to surprise fans with an announcement at The Game Awards 2019 tonight, but word of the update quickly spreading online forced it to clear things up earlier than planned. It's still possible NetherRealm could make a more formal announcement at The Game Awards tonight - or Ed Boon could just troll fans like he did last year.
The news of crossplay being suddenly and quietly added to Mortal Kombat 11, the biggest fighting game on PS4 and Xbox One, spread quickly through Twitter and Reddit, with players taking screenshots of the game's update history on PlayStation and sharing them online. The 6.8 GB patch on PlayStation 4 shows three broad patch notes: general bug fixes, gameplay updates, and added crossplay. Given that NetherRealm didn't do any promotion for Krossplay before this update dropped, it seems more and more likely that PlayStation Network spilled the beans before it was supposed to.
