The surprising reveal of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath represents a lot of firsts for the long running and popular fighting franchise. In addition to new characters, the expansion also brings about new character skins as well as a major narrative component that continues the story where it left off in the base game. Many of the Kombat Pack 1 characters seem to be placed in the spotlight for this expansion including Shang Tsung and Sindel.

In addition to the return of Sheeva and new guest character RoboCop, Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath finally makes fan favorite and long requested character Fujin playable. Although last playable in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, the God of Wind retains much of his moveset that makes him unique. He has a number of moves that utilize the wind as well as his martial arts style. Instead of a crossbow, Fujin comes with a sword he can utilize as well this time around.

Being a Boss

While most fans may remember Fujin as a playable fighter in Mortal Kombat 4, his first actually appearance in the franchise came a bit earlier. In the offshoot game Mortal Kombat Mythologies, the future character known as Fujin made his appearance as a boss character. The character known as Wind God was portrayed by Tony Marquez and was one of the four elemental gods Sub-Zero was sent out to destroy in order to claim a special amulet for Quan Chi.

Wearing bright blue pants, black headband, and a long red cape, the Wind God is capable of levitating to safety so players have found that it's best to stay close. Unfortunately, once his life meter is drained completely, Wind God uses a last ditch move which will instantly kill the player if they don't make it to the far right side of the stage first.

Fujin's Family Tree

Inside of the official Mortal Kombat 4 strategy guides, Fujin's origin was written to indicate that he was actually the brother of Raiden. What's strange is that was never mentioned in any of the games, leaving many fans to wonder if that was actually true or not.

Thankfully, the confusion has finally been cleared up in the latest Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath gameplay trailer in an intro dialogue between Sheeva and Fujin. Sheeva directly mentions Fujin and Raiden being brothers, putting this whole confusing bit of lore to bed once and for all.

Enhancing Takeda Takahashi

Following his appearances in Mortal Kombat 4 and Armageddon, Fujin went on a bit of a hiatus from being playable for about 14 years. Although he made a cameo in the story of Mortal Kombat X and remained a highly requested DLC character, he wouldn't actually make the cut.

However, thanks to the popular comic series based on Mortal Kombat X, Fujin was linked to another major character outside of Raiden. Takeda Takahashi, the son of Kenshi, gains a set of equipment that has been blessed by Fujin through the Jinsei and its life energy. Using this gear, which also ended up infusing the life energy into his soul, he was able to fight and survive encounters from possessed and enhanced versions of Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Kotal Kahn, Mileena, Raiden, and Havik. The infusion of life energy was even able to help him withstand a blast from Shinnok's amulet, which typically would kill the target instantly.

Mortal Kombat 4 Reintroduces WindGod

A fun little Easter egg was found in the 1.0 revision of the Mortal Kombat 4 arcade machine. By default, each of the character biography screens were disabled, though fans discovered cheat codes that could re-enable them. However, each biography featured bizarre and joke style lore for each of the characters as these were likely not intended to be seen.

Fujin's commentary is equally odd because his biography page calls him by his Mortal Kombat Mythologies name, WindGod. His biography reads:

"Windgod was always embarrassed cause his mom made him wear his hair in a pony tail. Now he's got quite an attitude."

Mortal Kombat (2011) Glitch

Speaking of glitches, a particular notorious one was found with the 2011 release of Mortal Kombat. It convinced so many people that Fujin was going to be added as a DLC character that the rumor is it pushed Ed Boon to scrap plans and deny that he was going to be added down the line.

A placeholder character called DLC BaseMale was discovered in the game's code. While the fighter had no special moves and was barely playable at all, the announcer would say the name Fujin when selected. It was more likely that this was a DLC character slot test, though the reason why Fujin was the name said is still a bit bizarre. However, Fujin did make an appearance in the PS3 version of the game in the ending segment for Kratos.

Mortal Kombat 11 is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
